Chongwenmen church of the Christian Church in Beijing is the first church established by the Methodist Church of the United States in Beijing and the whole North China. It was called aslitang at that time. When the church was first built, its appearance was the same as it is now, but it was relatively small and could only accommodate four or five hundred people. With the increasing number of church believers, the Methodist Church was rebuilt in 1880, and the new church was completed in 1882. In the summer of 1900, the hall was burned during the Boxer Movement. In 1902, the Qing government funded the reconstruction of yasli hall, which was completed in the spring of 1904. This is the chapel we see today. At that time, apart from the church, office and clergyman's residence (both located at No. 2 and No. 3 Hougou hutong), yasli church also had the properties of No. 1-2 Xiaoshun Hutong, No. 43 chongnei street and three cemeteries. With the development of church work, the Methodist church built Tongren Hospital, women's and children's Hospital, Huiwen kindergarten, Huiwen primary school, Huiwen Middle School, mu zhennu middle school, nursing school, Huiwen University (later merged into Yanjing University) and Huiwen Seminary (later renamed as Beijing seminary) around the chapel.
At the beginning of liberation, the above-mentioned hospitals and schools were all taken over by the government and turned into public hospitals. In the summer of 1958, the churches in Beijing carried out joint worship. The activities of asili church were suspended. The chapel and its affiliated buildings were occupied by Beijing No.13 middle school for women (formerly muzhennv middle school, later changed to No.125 middle school). The chapel was used as the auditorium of the school. During the "Cultural Revolution", all kinds of equipment in the hall were seriously damaged and beyond recognition. In the spring of 1982, the Beijing municipal government implemented the religious policy. With the assistance of the relevant departments, after a lot of negotiations, after paying RMB 20000 to 125 middle school, yasli hall was officially renamed Chongwenmen Hall of Beijing Christian Church after a large-scale renovation, and the gathering activities resumed at Christmas that year.
The architectural style of Chongwen gate hall is unique. The whole church covers an area of 8246 square meters. The main hall is divided into two parts: the main hall and the auxiliary hall. The main hall has more than 400 seats, and the auxiliary hall has more than 300 seats. In the middle, there are gates that can move up and down, which can be separated or combined. The chapel is round in shape, with a double-layer umbrella structure made of wood as a whole. The architectural style is extremely unique. In 1990, it was approved by the Beijing Municipal People's government as a key cultural relics protection unit at the municipal level.
In August 2001, the Beijing Municipal People's government allocated 4.8 million yuan to renovate the chapel and its attached houses. The glass of the chapel has been replaced with the traditional painted glass of the church, the chairs have been replaced with long wooden chairs, and the accessory rooms have also been rebuilt. On December 22, 2002, the 20th anniversary of Chongwenmen Hall's restoration and the thanksgiving service for its restoration were held. In 2004, it was the 100th anniversary of the founding of Chongwenmen hall. With the care and help of all walks of life, Chongwenmen hall held a series of celebration activities.
