Development history
According to the plan of the knowledge innovation project of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the need of the national implementation of the "ecological civilization" construction and strengthening the ecological environment publicity and education, in 1999, under the advocacy and concern of Comrade Li Lanqing, then Vice Premier of the State Council, the state invested funds to build the National Animal Museum relying on the Institute of zoology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
The museum integrates animal specimen collection and display, science popularization knowledge publicity and education, biodiversity description and cataloging. It is a professional museum representing the national level. It is a national academic institution integrating animal system and Evolution Research Institute, animal specimen collection and animal science knowledge popularization. It consists of two parts: animal specimen museum and specimen exhibition hall.
Overview of the library
The exhibition hall of the National Museum of zoology embodies the hard work and collective wisdom of several generations of zoological scientists in China. The total construction area is 7300 square meters, including 5500 square meters of exhibition area, which is divided into three floors. The architectural pattern imitates the French Museum of natural history. It has the function of popularizing zoological knowledge, publicizing the theme of environmental protection and harmonious coexistence between man and nature.
Exhibition hall
Relying on the strong scientific research background of Institute of zoology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, we systematically and comprehensively combine scientific knowledge with exquisite animal specimen exhibits, and make full use of various exhibition methods and means to guide visitors to learn and understand zoology knowledge from the superficial to the deep.
The exhibition hall was officially opened to the public on May 17, 2009. It has become a window for the Institute of zoology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences to provide social services, a base for ecological civilization education and science popularization, and a platform to shorten the distance between scientific researchers and the public.
There are 9 fixed exhibition halls, 1 mobile exhibition hall and a 4D dynamic cinema. Once the exhibition is completed, the fixed exhibition hall basically does not need to change, while the mobile exhibition hall is changed at any time according to different themes and hot issues of social concern, which ensures that the theme of the exhibition hall is closely linked with the society and serves the society.
After opening, the animal museum plans to open six days a week, close on Monday, receive 300 ordinary visitors a day, and open 300 days a year. In addition to the fixed exhibition content, a short-term theme exhibition and a series of special lectures will be held according to the needs of social development to guide the ordinary audience mainly young people to participate in and operate in person, so as to further improve the awareness of nature conservation.
The exhibition hall consists of ten independent exhibition halls, including animal diversity and evolution, invertebrates, birds, endangered animals, butterflies, insects, animal and human, and the development process, fine products and exchanges of animal research institutes. In addition, there are coffee shops and 4D dynamic cinemas for visitors to enjoy their leisure and entertainment. It is also an animal science theme bookstore and an open lecture hall for visitors to learn professional knowledge.
Animal Herbarium
It is the oldest herbarium collection institution in China. It has been established and developed gradually through the efforts of several generations of scientists in recent 100 years on the basis of the original Museum of Sinian, Institute of Jingsheng biology, Institute of zoology of Peking Research Institute, Museum of natural history of Academia Sinica and the Palace Museum.
The animal herbarium is now concentrated in an independent herbarium building, including fish, amphibians and reptiles, invertebrates, mammals, birds, insects and digital specimens. There are more than 5.3 million animal specimens in the museum, accounting for about one third of the total collection of biological specimens of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. It uses advanced high-strength metal intensive cabinet to store specimens, and its space can meet the development needs of the herbarium in the next few decades. The specimens collected in the herbarium include almost all the main groups and representative species in China. The collection covers specimens from all over the country, including Taiwan Province, as well as specimens from more than 20 countries. In addition, some precious specimens presented or exchanged abroad are also collected in our museum. The architectural pattern of the specimen exhibition hall imitates the natural history museum of Paris, France, with a construction area of 7500 square meters, including a three-and-a-half-story structure of one underground floor and two-and-a-half floors on the ground, of which the exhibition area is 5500 square meters.
