Built in 1900, the main body is a two-story European building with attic and basement. It was originally the residence of German expatriates. It was the only foreign consulate in Qingdao during World War II. In 1945, the consulate was cancelled by the Japanese authorities and restored to residence. In 1947, the 75th generation of Confucius sun Kong Xiangmian (Kong Xiangxi's younger brother, then general manager of Qingdao Industrial Bank and chairman of the Bank Association) bought the house for himself and his family to live in, which is called "South Garden". In 1986, Kong Lingren, the daughter of Kong Xiangmian and a professor of Shandong University, presented the homestead to Qingdao municipal government as "Confucius Memorial Hall in Nanyuan".
