Famous monk creates a temple
Yuanrong ancient temple is one of the 893 temples founded by fotucheng (231-351), a Buddhist monk in Western Jin Dynasty and later Zhao Dynasty, who is known as "the first monk of Folk Buddhism spreading to the East".
Yuanrong temple has a history of 1660 years, 1670 years earlier than the Longmen Grottoes in Luoyang built in the 20th year of Taihe reign of Emperor Xiaowen of the Northern Wei Dynasty (496 AD). It can be inferred that Yuanrong temple is the first ancient Buddhist temple in Northern Henan.
Standing in troubled times
Yuanrong temple was founded in the troubled times of the Sixteen Kingdoms of Wuhu and went through the wars in the northern and Southern Dynasties. Although it was only built for about a hundred years in the Northern Qi Dynasty, it had been devastated by the war. Later, the imperial monk Cho Guoshi of the Northern Qi Dynasty (4800-5600 A.D.) issued an imperial edict to build it.
Because Zen master Seng Chou was not only known as "the first person of Buddhism in Lingdong" at that time, but also the founder of "official Zen" in Chinese Buddhism, all the good believers from all walks of life devoted all their efforts to help the Zen master restore his former ancestral temple. Therefore, it took only more than ten years to make the ancient temple shine again. After the completion of the ancient temple, the walls are covered with golden tiles, the temples are towering, the courtyards are reset, and the number of permanent monks has reached more than 1000. At that time, it was called "the north of the river, the head of the Buddhist jungle in the Central Plains".
According to historical records, monk Cong passed away in 560 A.D. even though 560 A.D. was taken as the time mark for the rebirth of Yuanrong temple, it has been 1450 A.D. It seems that Yuanrong temple is a thousand year old temple, which is worthy of its name!
Millennium harmony
During the northern and Southern Dynasties, the power of the Dynasty changed, and the situation was changeable. Lingshan ancient temple was not immune from the disaster of war. During the Zhenguan period of the Tang Dynasty, because of the special historical position of Yuanrong temple and the public's admiration and nostalgia for monk Chou, the emperor of Tang Dynasty, who worshipped Buddhism, appropriated a large sum of money from the imperial treasury and ordered Zen master Su Bao to rebuild the ancestral court and revive Jialan. The emperor of the Tang Dynasty also specially ordered the Zen master Su Bao to set up a treasure Pavilion at the place where the Zen master started the ancient temple to learn Zen Buddhism, so as to support the Zen master and other statues to show his respect. From the remains of the White Jade Pagoda of the Tang Dynasty and the precious cultural relics of the Tang Dynasty, such as lions and tigers, stone tigers and stone statues, we can infer the prosperity and prosperity of this millennium old temple in the Tang Dynasty.
From the Tang Dynasty to the Northern Song Dynasty, the rich history of the ancient temples added a heavy stroke. In the Northern Song Dynasty, the ancient Temple (Dangyangyu) was located in a kiln that provided folk porcelain for millions of people in Kaifeng, the capital of the Song Dynasty. The kiln mouth here was prosperous for hundreds of miles. Therefore, for the religious needs of the kiln workers, the ancient temple once again reflected her harmony.
It is not only the compassion of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas that protects the people, but also the holy land of Kalan that contains the professional spirit of these craftsmen. This is the historical reason why Yuanrong temple, the ancestral court of Buddhist "official Zen", has a Dharma protection hall for gods of many folk beliefs, such as Mountain God, land God, fire god, etc. The Shuangta site in Song Dynasty and the legends about lubanjing and shengguquan also seem to confirm the coexistence of Buddhism and Taoism. It is this period of history that has left us many wonderful stories that have been praised for thousands of years. During the reconstruction of Yuanrong temple, ancient porcelain pieces of Song Dynasty and copper coins of Chongning period of Song Dynasty often appeared.
Later, because of the invasion of the Northern Song Dynasty by the Jin and Liao dynasties, the Zen Master Kong Bei, who was the head of the ancestral court at that time, was enraged by the generals of the Jin and Liao dynasties because he often sheltered refugees in the temple, which once again destroyed the millennium old temple in the war of the change of court power.
Prosperous scene
For more than a thousand years, Yuanrong temple has been full of war and has been revived and abandoned several times. During the Yongle period of Ming Dynasty, the king of Zhou Dynasty in bianzhou city made pilgrimage to the mountain. Seeing that the famous temple in the past was deserted, there were only a few bricks and tiles, and the grass was setting in the sun. With a sigh in his heart, he asked Zen master zongyou, a famous monk in Northern Henan Province at that time, to take charge of the temple and help it with ten thousand taels of money, so as to make the ancient temple shine again. When the builders were digging the mountain for earth, they unexpectedly found an ancient natural cave behind the temple. The cave is wide and flat, and can accommodate hundreds of people.
What's more amazing is that the stalactite in this cave looks like the inner abdomen of a person, with complete liver, gallbladder, heart and lung. Therefore, the king of Zhou specially ordered the jade craftsman to make a sitting statue of Bizhi Buddha with top-grade white jade for use in the cave. Since then, the people who came to Chaoshan to watch the cave have never ceased. Later, in the Qing Dynasty, Emperor Kangxi and Emperor Qianlong also visited Chaoshan cave in the name of Buddhist monk Chou.
Emperor Kangxi and Emperor Qianlong left the imperial calligraphy of "Lingshan Baoxiang" and "Lvjian LINGJI" respectively for the ancient temple. Since then, due to the unpredictable times, the heroes have been chased
