Ming Tang was built in 688 AD by Empress Wu Zetian at the site of Qianyuan palace, the main palace in Luoyang, in addition to the ancient Ming Tang system. It was excavated in the 1980s.
Mingtang is 294 feet high, 300 feet north and south, 300 feet East and West, with three floors: the lower floor corresponds to four seasons, namely spring, summer, autumn and winter; the middle floor is twelve hours, with a round cover on the top and nine dragons holding it; the upper floor is twenty-four solar terms, also with a round cover, with Shi Tiefeng on the top, ten feet high and decorated with gold. In the middle of the hall, there is a huge wooden stake, which is the main part of the Dougong beam. It runs from top to bottom and is called the Vientiane palace.
