Xiaoming tower
Located in Peixian County, Jiangsu Province, Xiaoming building was built in 1920s by French missionaries. It is one of the few preserved western style buildings in Xuzhou. The building adopts a combination of Chinese and Western style, reflecting the situation of western culture spreading to China in the early 20th century. Located in the campus of Peixian junior high school, Xiaoming building is a key cultural relic protection unit at the provincial level. Peixian Xiaoming building has a unique architectural style. Churches and ancillary facilities in other places are basically western architectural style. Only Peixian Xiaoming building has both western architectural characteristics and Oriental Garden characteristics, which is rare in the country.
History of Xiaoming building
Relevant information shows that the former Xiaoming building is the Catholic Church, which was built in 1707 for French missionaries. The Xiaoming building where the clergy lived was built in 1919. After the completion of the Catholic Church, French missionaries built a church school in the southwest of the church, named "Xiaoming church school", which is the reason why these buildings are collectively referred to as "Xiaoming building". The structure of the building is complete, the function is complete, the shape is simple and elegant, and the preservation condition is good. The original church, classroom and clergy building of the site were demolished in 1972. Now the clergy building, seven classrooms and four offices are still preserved. The plane of the clergy building is curved and divided into upper and lower floors. The upper floor is for living and office, and the lower floor is for basement. The middle floor is separated by wooden board, with a total area of 1458.21 square meters. The building is a combination of Chinese and Western brick concrete structure, divided into two parts. The exterior walls are made of fair faced brick, the doors, windows and pillars are made of arch fair faced brick, the triangle brick drawer type cornice is made of flying brick, and the south facade of the East building is made of wooden bucket arch.
According to Peixian Museum comrades, the site of the original church, classroom and clergy residential building. The church was demolished in 1972, and seven classrooms and four offices in the clergy building and the church school are still in good condition. Today's Xiaoming building has been carefully renovated and put into use again. The renovated Xiaoming building has become a museum of school history.
