The mystery of construction

Due to the lack of historical data and the unearthing of Steles, the specific construction time of the avant-garde waita is still a mystery. Experts can only roughly judge that it was built in the middle and early Liao Dynasty, about 1000 years ago. It is impossible to prove when the avant-garde slanting tower began to tilt because of its long history. I'm afraid that the real reason for its inclination will also become a mystery through the ages. Zhang Kaixin, vice president of Huludao historical society, made a bold conjecture that the tilt was caused by the earthquake after compiling historical books and years of investigation and research. Because the corridor in western Liaoning is an earthquake active area in history, there was a big earthquake in the second year of Longqing in the Ming Dynasty (1568). The walls of Ningyuan Acropolis (now the ancient city of Xingcheng) which was a strong castle outside the pass in the Ming Dynasty were collapsed. Many houses in Ningyuan and Qianwei were shocked beyond recognition, and the former Acropolis probably suffered at that time. Of course, the influence of groundwater erosion, wind and other factors can not be ruled out. In contrast, the Leaning Tower of Pisa in Italy is gradually inclined due to improper design.

Compared with other stone pagodas of the same period, the scale of avant-garde waita is not large. It is a solid brick tower with dense eaves. It is built with stone foundation and brick body. It is octagonal in three levels. The body of the tower is carved with patterns of Buddha, pattern and lion's head. The knife technique is exquisite and the lines are extremely clear. The slanting tower has a single top. The original top cover has collapsed. The original Flying brick carvings on the pagoda and the Buddha statues in the pagoda niche have been stolen and destroyed. According to Suizhong County annals, the measurement results more than 30 years ago showed that the tower body tilted 12 degrees to the northeast and the top shifted 1.7 meters.
