Dashanbao is the subalpine wetland ecosystem with the highest wintering altitude of black necked Crane in China. There are a large area of swamp wetland known as "the kidney of the earth" in Dashanbao, which has become an ideal wintering habitat for the world's endangered black necked Crane. According to relevant information, there are 32 kinds of cranes in the world, but only 15 kinds are left now. Black necked Crane is the only crane living in plateau wetland. Among the 5554 known black necked cranes in the world, more than 600 live in Dashanbao, accounting for a quarter of the known black necked Crane population in China. Black necked cranes mainly live in Dahaizi and tiaodun river. The plateau terrain is open, the mountain top is round, and the wetland is low concave. In particular, Dahaizi wetland is a low concave pot bottom with a relative height difference of 50-100m. In winter, the water level drops and the area of shallow water increases, so it is a good place for black necked Crane to sleep at night. Black necked cranes inhabit here from late October to early April of next year. According to the survey on January 19, 2005, 1131 cranes were observed, including 862 adult cranes, accounting for 76.2% of the total number; 269 sub adult cranes and young cranes, accounting for 23.8% of the total number.
