Longxi County, the old place name of Fujian Province, is Fuguo County of Zhangzhou Prefecture. The county is the ancient city of Zhangzhou in Xiangcheng District of Zhangzhou city. It was founded in 540 A.D. in the sixth year of the Datong reign of emperor Liang Wu of the Southern Dynasty. It has been more than 1000 years. It is one of the political, economic and cultural centers in Southern Fujian.
In June 1951, the first and second districts of Chengguan in Longxi County were set up as Zhangzhou City (now Xiangcheng District). On August 15, 1960, the State Council approved the merger of Longxi County and adjacent Haicheng county (the county is now Haicheng Town, Longhai City, Zhangzhou City, and the county also includes the area except Dongfu Town, Haicang District, Xiamen City) into Longhai county. In July 1985, the administrative office of Longxi district was abolished, and Zhangzhou city was upgraded to prefecture level city. On September 21, the original organizational system of Zhangzhou city was changed into Xiangcheng District. On May 12, 1993, Longhai county was officially approved by the State Council.

Longxi County is one of the four counties of Jian'an county (roughly equivalent to Fujian Province) in Sui Dynasty (the other three counties are Jian'an, min and Nan'an). It is the political, economic and cultural center of Southwest Fujian.

In the early Tang Dynasty, Zhenguan was divided into ten areas, and Fujian was under the jurisdiction of Lingnan road. By Wu Zhou Dynasty, Longxi County (Zhangqian area) had great changes. When Longxi County was first established, it was located in most of today's Longhai, Xiangcheng District, Hua'an County, Longwen District, Taiwan investment zone, Haicang in Xiamen and Western Fujian.
In 592, sui'an and lanshui counties were merged into Longxi County, which has jurisdiction over both present-day Zhangzhou city and Haicang and Western Fujian in Xiamen.

In May of the Republic of China, Huafeng of Longxi County was promoted to Hua'an County. Zhaiban, Yintang and shajian in the 24th capital of Longxi and Puxi, Taoyuan, guide, Yingfu, Shengping, Longling, Yizhao, Huafeng, Zhenshan, Dashen and Penglai Dakeng in the 25th capital of Longxi belong to Hua'an County.
In June 1951, Zhangzhou City (now Xiangcheng District) was set up in Chengguan District 1 and Chengguan District 2 of jielongxi county.
On February 17, 1957, eight townships of waiyun, Baiyun, Chengxi, Tatan, coazuo, Renjia, Guanyuan and yangkui in Chengxi District of Nanjing County were assigned to Longxi County. In April 1967, Zhangzhou city and Longhai county were subordinate to the military control committee of Longxi region of Fujian Province of the Chinese people's Liberation Army. On May 15, 1968, the revolutionary committees of Zhangzhou city and Longhai county were established under the Revolutionary Committee of Longxi district.
In March 1978, Zhangzhou city and Longhai County belonged to Longxi district administrative office.
In October 1980, Zhangzhou municipal Revolutionary Committee and Longhai County Revolutionary Committee were changed into Zhangzhou Municipal People's government and Longhai County People's government, still under Longxi district administrative office.

In July 2011, jiaomei Town, jiaomei Development Zone and Longchi Development Zone of Longhai City were established as Zhangzhou Taiwan investment zone, which is directly under the jurisdiction of Zhangzhou city.
On December 20, 2013, Zhangzhou high tech Industrial Development Zone was established in Nanjing high tech Zone (Jingcheng Town, Nanjing County), Yuanshan new town (yancuo Town, Jiuhu Town, Longhai City and Qiaonan District, Xiangcheng District), Tianbao Town, Dafang farm, Jinfeng Development Zone and Lantian Development Zone, Longwen District, which is directly under the jurisdiction of Zhangzhou municipal government.
