In 498, the first year of Yongtai in the Southern Qi Dynasty, the Qi sent Yuzhou (now Runan County in Henan Province) to judge Shi Pei Shuye, who led 50000 elite troops to capture Guoyang. The battle was extremely fierce. Qi soldiers pressed the city, surrounded Guoyang heavily, and Wei troops defended the isolated city. The Qi army piled up the bodies of the Wei army outside the city, and the food in the city was exhausted. Meng Biao led the city guards to eat the withered grass, grass roots and bark, and tenaciously defended them for more than two months before they were rescued.
Due to his meritorious service in guarding Guoyang, Emperor Xiaowen of the Northern Wei Dynasty granted Mencius the title of Wenyang (now North of Sishui County, Shandong Province) Bo and Pingxi generals.
