Sheng Xuanhuai's former residence
Sheng Xuanhuai's former residence in Changzhou is a well preserved Chinese style villa located at 18 damayuan Lane in Changzhou, less than 20 meters away from Qu Qiubai's former residence next door. Sheng Xuanhuai (1844-1916), who was born in Wujin, Jiangsu Province, was named xingsun. He joined Li Hongzhang's shogunate in 1870. After participating in the establishment of China's first large-scale civil shipping ship investment promotion bureau, he presided over the establishment of a number of enterprises and schools. He became the richest man in the country by doing Westernization affairs. He first advocated "southeast mutual protection" in an attempt to stabilize the Yangtze River Basin from the influence of the Boxer Movement. He also aroused the trend of road protection in Sichuan due to the implementation of the state-owned railway policy, which became the fuse of the 1911 Revolution and was dismissed by the Qing government. He left Japan and died in Shanghai.
When you come to the east entrance of xiaoshiqiao Hutong on the old Gulou Street, you can see that the golden and magnificent archway stands at the entrance of the Hutong, and the word "Shengyuan" on the plaque has been changed to "Zhuyuan". The stone tablet originally engraved with "Shengyuan is located at No. 24 of xiaoshiqiao Hutong, shengxuanhuai mansion, postmaster of the late Qing Dynasty" has also been removed. It used to be the private residence of Sheng Xuanhuai, the postal minister in the late Qing Dynasty. It was also the garden of Li Lianying, the eunuch. It is a Chinese garden style building.

After participating in the establishment of China's first large-scale civil shipping ship investment promotion bureau, he presided over the establishment of a number of enterprises and schools. He became the richest man in the country by doing Westernization affairs. Some people estimated that his property amounted to 20 million taels of silver, and gradually achieved the goal of becoming a senior official. He once served successively as the director of Tianjin Customs, Minister of Commerce of the association office, and Secretary of the Ministry of post and telecommunications. Because he was a senior official, his social activities had to be controlled by the Qing government internally and by the foreign powers externally. The semi feudal and semi colonial social environment made him have multiple historical colors.
