Taping Temple

Located in guzangshanping, taping village, Jizhen Township, Jingguan Town, Beibei District, Chongqing. It was built in 1146, the 16th year of Shaoxing in Song Dynasty. It took 22 years and was completed at the end of 1168. It has a history of more than 840 years.

Taping temple, formerly known as the ancient Tibetan temple of xiaokunlun, was renamed taping temple when it was rebuilt in the Wanli year of Ming Dynasty because of the stone square in front of the temple. It was listed as a provincial cultural relic protection unit in Sichuan in 1986.

Covering an area of 500 square meters, the temple is a courtyard building. It is a building group integrating temple, tower, square and watch. It is also a tower centered building lost in Central China since Tang Dynasty. The temple has a stone pagoda built in 1167 ad, a memorial archway built in 1612, and cultural relics of the Qing Dynasty, such as Daxiong hall, sutra collection building, left and right wing rooms, iron tower and Yunleng stele (Sutra building).

Historical changes

It was built in 1146, the 16th year of Shaoxing in Song Dynasty. It took 22 years and was completed at the end of 1168. It has a history of more than 840 years.

It was renovated in 1612. In the early Qing Dynasty, temples were in ruins.

In the last years of Qianlong reign of the Qing Dynasty, the upper and lower halls were restored after ten years of renovation.

Qing Jiaqing five years (1800), because of war burned.

In 1816, sengpuzhan rebuilt the main hall and left and right corridors.

In the spring of 1824, the Sutra pavilion was rebuilt.

In the autumn of 1836, the upper hall was rebuilt.

In the Republic of China, it was as famous as Jinyun temple in Beibei.

After the founding of new China, the song brick (stone) Pagoda in the temple was listed as a historical relic of Sichuan Province. During the cultural revolution, it was seriously damaged. In 1983, it was listed as a municipal cultural relics protection unit. In 2000, it was listed as the first batch of cultural relics protection units directly under the central government in Chongqing.

The temple is built close to the mountain, with winding mountains on all sides and towering tower peaks in the middle. The gate of the temple is of brick and stone structure. On the left side is the reception hall. There is a pair of Huabiao beside the hall. It is 5 meters high and 3 meters apart. It is a rectangular stone column with a lion on the top and a fish plate on the bottom. About 40 steps away from the passageway, there is a stone imitation wood structure archway with four pillars and three gates on the top of the mountain. The archway is 12 meters high and 7 meters wide. In the middle of the archway, there is a horizontal plaque with the title of "Wanli Renzi suijian". Under the plaque, there are figures' reliefs and animal decorative patterns on the lintel. The shape is simple and elegant, and the craft is exquisite. It is a fine building of the Ming Dynasty.

At the end of the passage are the Jingchuang (also known as yunbei) and the stone tablet Pavilion of the Qing Dynasty. The Jingchuang is a hexagonal stele. The body of the stele is divided into two sections, with alternate short eaves and slightly upturned short eaves. The body of the stele bears the record of "inscribed ancient pagoda". The stele is engraved with the vicissitudes of life of taping temple, the burning of the temple and the poems praising the pagoda.

The stone pagoda of the Song Dynasty stands in the temple, enjoying the praise of "writing in the sky, writing in the sky, and building in the ground.". The stone tower is a hollow tower with Square Pavilion brick structure. It is 14.4 meters high and 6.2 meters long at the bottom. There is an iron tower in the back hall. It was built in 1824, the fourth year of Daoguang reign of the Qing Dynasty. It is a hexagonal seven level tower, with a height of 6.38 meters and a bottom circumference of 5.22 meters. Many gold statues were cast at all levels, and engraved with the beginning and end of the iron tower casting. Each tower angle slightly up, are hanging small bell, the breeze over the place, the voice and rhyme, never to the ear. Every time the lights and candles shine, the golden light of the tower body reflects and shines all over the hall. The scale of iron tower is the largest in Sichuan Province. It is an important relic to study the foundry technology of Qing Dynasty.
