Development history
Shipbuilding has a long history in the world. Since ancient times, ships have been the most important means of water transportation. From the 15th century to the 19th century, ships were the only carrier sailing to the other side of the world. The history of shipbuilding is closely related to the exploration on the sea in the 15th century, the great geographical discoveries in the 16th-17th century, the struggle for supremacy on the sea and the overseas immigrants in the 18th-19th century. As far as a coastal country is concerned, shipbuilding industry maintains the rise and fall of the country. The history of world shipbuilding is also a miniature of the history of human civilization and science and technology, which contains rich and vivid contents. So far, it can be said that no other professional field contains so much historical connotation. It is the long-term goal of Chinese shipbuilders to show this panoramic history to the world. Over the past 10 years, there has been a growing call for the construction of a Ship Museum in China. However, it costs more than 1 billion yuan to build a Ship Museum to show Chinese and foreign shipbuilding civilization, and there are also super large venues. Moreover, even the largest ship Museum in the world, which costs billions of yuan, can not achieve the goal of showing the panorama of world shipbuilding history. The ship digital museum of Shanghai Jiaotong University, using advanced computer information technology, breaks through the space-time, geographical and financial constraints of building a physical Ship Museum, and will display a wide range of shipbuilding technology and historical and cultural knowledge.
