It feels like a fairyland on earth. Visitors can climb up the stairs along the north gate or East Gate Mountain Road. The road is quiet, with ancient wood, bamboo and green shade on both sides. Xiudaozhe tower is located on the East hillside. There is a tower in the mountain, and all the peaks are alive. The tower has seven floors and eight sides. It is made of brick and wood. It is more than 20 meters high. It is tall, tall and beautiful. The pagoda was built in 976-984 A.D. during the period of Taiping Heavenly Kingdom in the Northern Song Dynasty. There are corridors around the pagoda base. Each layer of the pagoda has a small north-south gate. It has a beautiful shape. For thousands of years, those who show the way have stood on the edge of the shade, adding luster to the landscape of Sheshan. Under the tower is the old site of Chaoyin, and beside it is the tiger tree Pavilion. From the south gate to the hillside, there is Zhongshan church. The church was built in 1844, more than 100 years ago. There is a square in front of the gate, which can accommodate thousands of people. Beside the square, there are three pavilions, which are dedicated to the Holy Father, the Virgin Mary and the statue of Jesus respectively. From the nave up, there is a wide stone road. There are pavilions at the corner, and there is a statue of Jesus' suffering on the wall of the pavilion, so it is also called bitter road. There is a red building on the top of the mountain. This is the famous Catholic Church. It was built by French missionaries in 1871, rebuilt and expanded in 1925 and completed in 1935. It's magnificent and magnificent. Next to it is a domed building, the Sheshan Observatory of Shanghai Observatory, where astronomers explore the mysteries of the universe. From the west gate to the top of the mountain, there is a winding highway, with a total length of nearly 3 li. Notre Dame Hall
It is a Catholic Church as famous as the Notre Dame hall in Rhodes, France, also known as Notre Dame hall in the Far East. The church was founded by French missionaries in 1871. It was completed in 1935. It integrates a variety of architectural styles and adopts the four no structure without wood, nail, steel and beam, which can be regarded as a model of asymmetry. Since the 1940s, it has been a world-famous Catholic Holy Land and the most important pilgrimage site in China.
The Notre Dame hall in Sheshan was built by French missionaries in 1871, rebuilt and expanded in 1925, and completed in 1935. The hall is 56 meters long from east to west and 25 meters wide from north to south, with a construction area of 1400 square meters. The plan of the building is Latin cross. The height from the temple base to the cross spire is 38 meters, including 17 meters to the vault and 22 meters to the sulfur glazed tile. There are 1000 seats in the main hall, which can accommodate about 1500 members.
This Roman transitional style church, known as "four no", namely no nails, no wood, no steel, no beam, can be regarded as a model of asymmetric architecture. The architectural style is long in the South and short in the north, wide in the East and narrow in the west, round inside and sharp outside, stone inside and brick outside. The main hall integrates a variety of architectural styles. Its arch and corridor are Romanesque, the pillars are Greek, the spire is Gothic, the olive shaped bell tower is Israeli, the small dome at the east end is Spanish, the water wall and bucket corner floor tiles are Chinese national style, and the sulfur glazed tiles are Chinese palace style. The hall is warm in winter and cool in summer with excellent lighting. The wall groove between the column and the bucket arch has good function of absorbing moisture and cleaning.
On September 12, 1942, Pope Pius XII of Rome canonized Sheshan church as minor Basilica, which was the first temple in the Far East to be canonized by the Pope.
Seismic station
The Sheshan seismic base station, formerly known as Shanghai Observatory, has a history of 100 years. Sheshan seismic base station is a first-class station of the State Seismological Bureau. It is equipped with various advanced observation instruments and specialized personnel. It provides high-quality seismic data and data at home and abroad. It has participated in the international joint earth survey for many times. Here, people can also see many little-known seismic data, such as the Great Tangshan earthquake in China and the great earthquake in Japan that shocked the world, as well as video data such as animals and earthquakes. On the hillside of the West Sheshan mountain, there is a church, the Catholic nave. As early as 1844, the French missionary nangru came here to survey the terrain and prepare to build houses. Since then, religious facilities have been continuously expanded. Today's Zhongshan church, built in 1894, has an altar for worshiping statues, which can accommodate more than 500 people. There is a round square in front of the nave, which can accommodate thousands of people. You can see the scenery around with the railing. On the west side of the square, there is an open space. There are three pavilions, namely, the pavilion of the sacred heart of Jesus, the pavilion of the Virgin Mary and the pavilion of Joseph. It has been a world-famous Catholic Holy Land since the 1970s, and it is also the main pilgrimage site of Catholicism in China. Xiudaozhe tower, located on the east slope of the West Sheshan mountain, was built in the Taiping Xingguo period of the Song Dynasty. It has 8 sides, 7 levels, and more than 20 meters high. It is a brick and wood structure pavilion type tower. It is said that the practitioner "Xiu" lived in seclusion here. After the tower was built, it ignited a fire and set itself on fire, so it is called xiudaozhe tower. Founded in 1899 by French missionaries, it is the earliest modern Observatory in China and one of the astronomical research centers in China. Its astronomical telescope is the earliest one in China, which has accumulated a lot of valuable astronomical data for our country. In recent years, another astronomical observatory has been built in the west head of Sheshan Catholic Church, which is equipped with an optical astronomical telescope with a diameter of 164 cm. There are also two laser telescopes, radio telescopes, optical refraction telescopes with a diameter of 156 cm and other advanced instruments and equipment in the observatory. Recently, two new high-precision sundials and a celestial sphere have been added to Sheshan observatory. The two sundials are made of stainless steel and white marble respectively. They can measure the hours of the day and the solar terms in spring, summer, autumn and winter according to the shadow line of the sun. They are the latest sundials in China. Since the founding of the people's Republic of China, Sheshan Observatory has made 27 national scientific research achievements in celestial body operation and orbit determination by man-made satellites. It is the unit that China participates in the international joint measurement of earth rotation by using new technologies.
