Historical evolution
Luwan District Library, located at 235 South Shaanxi Road, formerly known as Mingfu library, the first public science and Technology Library in China, inherits the resources of Shanghai People's library, and is now a national first-class public library with pleasant books.
The main building of the library was built in 1929. Sun Ke's inscription on the corner stone is clear: "on November 2, the 18th of the Republic of China, the Science Society of China held the foundation stone laying ceremony for the Mingfu library". Now it is the Mingfu building of Luwan District Library. The second building is the Lele library donated by Guan kangcai, a Chinese American. The two-story building of Ming Huang in the right rear is called Huixin building, with clear and concise lines and Spanish style. It is the birthplace of China Association for the promotion of democracy.
Mingfulou: witness the scientific dream of the returnees in the Republic of China
Mingfu building, formerly known as Mingfu library, still retains its original functional structure: three floors in the south are set with offices, reading rooms and conference halls; five floors in the north are stacks with fixed steel bookshelves. All steel frames, steel doors and steel windows are customized in the United States to prevent fire and moisture. There was a hand lift connection between the stacks, but it has been demolished because of "old age".
Even in today's eyes, the design of this library is still very humanized. At the opening ceremony on January 1, 1931, this modern library made a sensation among scholars at that time. Ma Xiangbo, 92 years old, rushed to the venue despite the cold and wind. Cai Yuanpei praised the library as a scientific installation, and expressed his earnest hope in his speech that it would be expanded into a book edition Museum in the future, displaying ancient Bibles and absorbing rare books from all over the world. They even suggested that libraries and collectors in Nanjing, Beiping, Hangzhou and Shanghai send oracle bone inscriptions, as well as engraved and copied copies of Ming, yuan, song, and even Tang and Sui dynasties to display.
Mingfu library is the first professional library with new design in China. Its construction and establishment can be said to be the crystallization of the painstaking efforts of a group of early returned scientists studying abroad. The idea of building Ming Fu library can be traced back to the campus of Cornell University around 1915.
On the eve of the outbreak of the first World War, Cornell University gathered a group of top Chinese students studying abroad. Among them, Hu Mingfu and Zhao Yuanren studied in the United States through the "Geng fund" of the travel aesthetics Office of the Qing government, majoring in mathematics, machinery and other majors, in order to serve the country; others, such as Ren Hongjun and Yang Xingfo, went to further study after the success of the 1911 Revolution. The eaves of Cornell University witnessed the collision and convergence of these two parts of young people's thoughts. "Saving the country by science" is their common ideal. On October 25, 1915, these young people set up the Chinese Science Society with the purpose of "contacting comrades, studying academics, and striving for the development of Chinese science". They set up magazines and libraries to arouse people's love for science, so as to realize the dream of "saving the country by science" and "saving the country by education".
In 1918, with the return of the founders and major members of the Chinese science society, the activities of the Chinese science society were transferred from Cornell University to Nanjing, Shanghai and other places. In 1927, members of the science society founded a library of the Chinese Science Society in Nanjing, but it was very small and soon destroyed by war. In 1928, the society decided to purchase land in Shanghai and set up a society and library.
During the preparation of the library, Hu Mingfu, the backbone of the science society, drowned and died at the age of 36. Hu Mingfu is the first doctor of mathematics in China. His hard work is to a great extent responsible for his persistence and growth in the cause of the science society. At that time, Hu Mingfu was not only the director of the society, but also the accountant and manager. He was very careful about all the revenue and expenditure of social activities and magazines. At the same time, he also ran everywhere to raise money and raise money. When the library was completed, Cai Yuanpei proposed to name it Hu Mingfu. In 1931, the library was officially opened to the public on New Year's day. In his speech at the opening ceremony, Cai Yuanpei said: "this library commemorates Mr. Hu fuming, because he was an important sponsor of the society and made great sacrifice for the society. Until the day of his death, he was still diligent in social affairs. Therefore, the first great building of our society is in memory of Mr. Ming Fu. "
Huixinlou: the birthplace of China Association for the promotion of democracy
Huixin building, the former site of the general office of China Science Society, is located at 237 South Shaanxi Road (the intersection of Shaoxing). China Science Society is a scientific organization with the largest influence, the widest coverage and the largest number of participants in the first half of the 20th century in China. Its tenet is: "to contact comrades, to study academics, and to work together for the development of Chinese science." Mr. Ren Hongjun said in his book a brief history of the Chinese Science Society: "in 1928, the Chinese science society decided to purchase more than three mu of real estate on Shannxi South Road in Shanghai as the headquarters, and built a library in 1930.". It is not only the main place for scientists to conduct activities, but also the main position for patriotic and democratic people to discuss current affairs. On December 30, 1945, Ma Xulun, Wang Shaofan, Lei Jieqiong, Zhao Puchu, ZHOU Jianren, Liu Dajie, Ke Ling and others gathered in this small building to hold the founding meeting of the China Association for the promotion of democracy, which left a deep impression on Modern Chinese history. Now the signatures of the members of the founding meeting have been made and hung on the wall of the first floor of Huixin building. In 1956, the Chinese Science Society donated it to the state. In the following decades, it became a residence for seven families.
In 2004, the Luwan District government spent a lot of money to move the residents and renovate them, basically restoring their original appearance. Then, the building was handed over to Luwan District Library. After decades of trials and hardships, the building returned to its original starting point -- cultural and educational education. On January 14, 2005, Mr. Mi Yiqun, one of the 26 promoters of the China Association for the promotion of democracy, returned to Shanghai from Canada to visit his relatives. The Shanghai Municipal Committee of the Democratic Progressive Movement asked Mr. Mi Lao to visit the library of the district. When Mr. Mi approached the small building being decorated, he said with great certainty, "this is where the meeting was held, this is where it is." On December 18, 2005, in commemoration of the 60th anniversary of the founding of the China Association for the promotion of democracy, Xu Jialu, vice chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress and chairman of the Central Committee of the Democratic Progressive Party, Zhang Huaixi, vice chairman of the CPPCC National Committee and executive vice chairman of the Central Committee of the Democratic Progressive Party, and Yan Junqi, vice mayor of Shanghai, vice chairman of the Central Committee of the Democratic Progressive Party and chairman of the Shanghai Municipal Committee of the Democratic Progressive Party, paid a visit to the former site of the founding of the Democratic Progressive Party and held commemorative activities. Vice Chairman Xu Jialu delivered an important speech at the commemorative meeting. He said that in the process of exploring, confirming and confirming the former site of the establishment of the DPP, he received the full support and concern of the United Front Work Department of the Shanghai municipal Party committee, the Luwan District Party committee, the District Cultural Bureau and the library, which is very similar to the scene of the establishment of the DPP 60 years ago under the leadership and support of the Communist Party of China. The discovery and determination of the former site of the establishment of DPP is an epitome and an illustration of China's multi-party cooperation system, which is a historical witness to both the Communist Party of China and the DPP. The DPP should regard the former site as a base for the plenary session to carry out the fine tradition education of multi-party cooperation, encourage the DPP members to inherit the will of the older generation, carry forward the fine tradition of DPP, continuously consolidate the political foundation of multi-party cooperation in the new century and new stage, more consciously support the leadership of the Communist Party of China, and cooperate closely with the Communist Party of China. Since the establishment of the former Minjin site, it has received dozens and thousands of visitors from all over the country.
Now, the small building not only holds thousands of precious ancient books of Ming and Qing Dynasties, but also has a reading room for calligraphy and painting materials, a reading room for foreign language materials, etc. it also has a special salon service in the living room on the first floor near the garden. The salon has attracted many celebrities from the cultural and scientific circles, and the small building seems to return to the grand occasion of cultural prosperity. The second floor building is now a comic book reference room. Comic book is a unique collection of Luwan District Library. Luwan library has a collection of 5000 comic books, including hand-painted comic books of great collection value, Movie Comic Books of all time popularity, Qian xiaodai's "yutangchun", Zhao hongben's "Qi Jiguang", "seven heroes and five righteousness", Gu Bingxin's "crossing the river reconnaissance" Many masterpieces of famous comic books can be found. On June 3, 2005, Xiaolou was named "huixinlou" because of a poetry recitation called "huixinyixiao". It is a new mode of using the old western style buildings in Shanghai to do library and inherit the context.
