Located in Tianwei near Zhangzhou Road, the residence of the Deputy tax department of the Customs (also known as the "big assistant building") was the residence of the senior staff of Xiamen Customs at that time. It was composed of two buildings. From 1865 to 1870, Xiamen Customs purchased a villa from Yingshang Deji, which was destroyed by a strong typhoon in September 1917. From 1923 to 1924, two new buildings were built on the original site. Among them, No. 9 Zhangzhou road is now known as "hill crest", with an area of about 650 square meters; No. 11 Zhangzhou road is known as "hill view", with an area of more than 820 square meters. The form and style of these two buildings are very similar. The architectural style is simple and concise. Obviously influenced by the modern architectural trend at that time, they have the style of American prairie villa. Veranda are set on both sides of the two buildings. The corner pillars are thick and built with fair faced red brick. The corridor pillars sandwiched in the middle are thin white reinforced concrete columns. Columns, beams, floors, railings, roof eaves and other reinforced concrete components are painted in white, forming a strong contrast with the red brick thick columns and walls.
