In 1958, the bronze statue of Avalokitesvara was destroyed and the temple disappeared. On May 23, 1993, the people's Government of Emeishan City approved the Emeishan Buddhist Association to "restore the Great Buddha Hall at the original site of the Great Buddha Hall" with document (1993) No. 64. Later, because the original buildings were too dense, it was difficult to demolish, and the scale of the temple was limited. Therefore, in 1995, the municipal government approved the Emeishan Buddhist Association to raise funds to purchase 226 mu of land in the southern suburb of Baitashan to restore and rebuild the great Buddhist temple. According to the cultural connotation of Puxian Daochang and the needs of the development of Emeishan Buddhist culture, the Emeishan Buddhist Association, after repeated discussion and serious study, reported to the government for approval and decided to change the name of the Great Buddha Temple to "Great Buddha Temple".
On April 6, 1996 (the birthday of Guanyin Bodhisattva), Mount Emei Buddhist Association held the foundation laying ceremony of sajing in the Great Buddha Temple on the Baita Mountain in the south of Emei city. Master Kuanming, master Yongshou and master Tongxiao, the leaders of the province, Leshan City and Emeishan City, the eminent monks Dade, the elders of Zhushan and the believers from all over the province attended the meeting. After the news of the restoration of the Great Buddha Temple was reported by various media, it has aroused widespread concern of the society, and the restoration work has been actively supported by ten believers. After intense preparation, on March 19, 1998 (the birthday of Puxian Bodhisattva), the restoration project of the Great Buddha Temple officially broke the ground. The temple was built at the "pagoda" of the original Great Buddha Temple, outside the moat in the south of Emei city.
