The former site of the General Political Department of the Red Army is not far from the site of the Zunyi Conference, which is only a few minutes' walk away. Compared with the meeting site, it is much more humble. The former site of the political department is in the Catholic Church in Yangliu street, the old city of Zunyi. The church is made up of two parts: the scripture hall and the school. At the north end, the Sutra hall is a "Romanesque" building. School in the south end, is a group of courtyard bungalows, wood structure. The church was first built in 1866. In 1978, the State Administration of cultural relics appropriated special funds to repair the church. On the premise of strictly maintaining the original appearance, the original brick and wood structure was rebuilt into reinforced concrete structure.
Former site of the General Political Department of the Red Army
During the long march of the Red Army, the General Political Department was set up in the Catholic Church of Yangliu street in Zunyi. Now it is a key cultural relic protection unit in China. The church is made up of two parts: the scripture hall and the school. At the north end, the Sutra hall is a "Romanesque" building. School in the south end, is a group of courtyard bungalows, wood structure.
Church History
The church was built in 1866, the fifth year of the reign of emperor Tongzhi of the Qing Dynasty. Because it has never been repaired, its wooden columns are decayed and its walls are inclined. In 1978, the State Administration of cultural relics allocated special funds to carry out thorough maintenance. Under the condition of strictly maintaining the original appearance, the brick and wood structure was changed into reinforced concrete structure. In 1984, a special fund was allocated to maintain the Catholic Church as an exhibition hall of Zunyi Conference, which is an integral part of the Zunyi Conference site, a national key cultural relics protection unit. After the Zunyi Meeting in January 1935, the Party Central Committee held a meeting of the Red Army headquarters in the hall. Mao Zedong, Zhou Enlai, Zhang Wentian and others conveyed the spirit of the Zunyi Meeting at the meeting, which greatly inspired the vast number of commanders and fighters.
Historical story
The Red Army entered Zunyi
The Catholic Church was built in 1867 by the French missionary Shapur. The main building consists of two parts: the Sutra hall and the school, covering an area of 13555 square meters and surrounded by walls. The precipitous and carved walls are quite rich. After the Red Army entered Zunyi, the General Political Department of the Central Revolutionary Military Commission (hereinafter referred to as the General Political Department of the Red Army) set up its organization, propaganda, sabotage, youth, government affairs and Secretariat in the Catholic Church. In order to mobilize the masses, as soon as the Red Army entered the city, the General Political Department held a mass meeting in the hall. The meeting was attended by one or two hundred people, including masons, carpenters, masons, tailors, strippers, straw shoemakers, vegetable sellers, shop owners, industry masters, students and teachers. Under the leadership of the General Political Department of the Red Army and through serious discussion of the mass representatives, it was decided to quickly establish various revolutionary political power organizations, mass organizations and revolutionary armed forces, such as "Zunyi County Revolutionary Committee", "Huishan Township Revolutionary Committee", "red trade union" and "political Department defending guerrillas", so as to rapidly carry out various revolutionary activities in Zunyi. At the meeting, revolutionary documents and propaganda materials such as the outline of the constitution of the Soviet Republic of China, the letter of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China to the people, and where is the way out were distributed to the masses. At the same time, Zunyi's "Ganren" (i.e. the poor) also shared the floating wealth of bureaucrats and landlords here.
The second crossing of Chishui by the Red Army to conquer Zunyi again
When the Red Army crossed Chishui for the second time and conquered Zunyi again, the General Political Department also held a general meeting of cadres at or above the battalion level and the section level in the Sutra hall. Mao Zedong, Zhou Enlai and Zhang Wentian respectively spoke at the meeting, dissecting the reasons for the failure of our army's fifth anti "encirclement and suppression" campaign and explaining the correct operational principles of the Red Army. In his speech, Mao Zedong once vividly said that in the fifth anti "encirclement and suppression" campaign, the Red Army, because of the mistakes of "left" adventurism, was passively beaten everywhere and would never be active on its own. At that time, the situation of the Red Army was that "the beggar beat the dog, walked while fighting, and was bitten by the dog at any time."
When the red army returned to Zunyi after the second crossing of Chishui, the headquarters of the first Red Army Corps held a meeting here to summarize the fighting situation in the past month after the Zunyi Meeting.
At that time, Li Fuchun, acting director of the General Political Department of the Red Army, Cai Chang and Liu Qunxian, who worked in the General Political Department, lived here.
Provincial key cultural relics protection units
The development process of the site
In 1978, the wooden pillars of the Sutra hall were decayed, the four walls were inclined and nearly collapsed. The State Administration of cultural relics allocated special funds for comprehensive and thorough maintenance and sorting. In February 1982, the people's Government of Guizhou Province decided that Zunyi Catholic Church, the former site of the General Political Department of the Red Army, is a key cultural relic protection unit at the provincial level and is managed by Zunyi Conference Memorial Hall. In December 1983, the former site of the General Political Department of the Red Army was renovated. The State Administration of cultural relics agreed that the former site of the General Political Department of the Red Army should be a part of the Zunyi Conference site, a national key cultural relics protection unit. In 1984, the State Administration of cultural relics allocated a large sum of money to carry out a comprehensive and thorough maintenance of the part of the Catholic Church and its surrounding environment. Zunyi library moved out at the same time. On November 2, 1984, Deng Xiaoping inscribed "the former site of the General Political Department of the Red Army". In order to make full use of the architectural space in the former site, the memorial hall turned the school into "Zunyi Conference auxiliary exhibition room". At the end of 1984, on the eve of commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Zunyi Conference, "the former site of the General Political Department of the Red Army" and "the auxiliary exhibition room of the Zunyi Conference" were officially opened to the public. The room was not closed until the completion of the new exhibition hall in 2004. According to the survey data, the old site restored and displayed the red army cadres conference venue, the Red Star newspaper room, and the living rooms of Li Fuchun and Xiao Xiangrong, all of which were open to the public.
