place
Li Yuan book house is located in Huairou Town, a suburb of Beijing, near the mountains, providing a comfortable and quiet reading space. The base of the library is surrounded by mountains and waters. The scenery is quiet and natural.
Design background
"Liyuan bookstore" was built in early 2011 and delivered to Chinese designer Li Xiaodong on October 24 of the same year.
In October 2010, he came to jiejiehe village to visit friends. Attracted by the surrounding scenery, he came up with the idea of designing and donating a library for the village. Li Xiaodong personally selected the site for the library. Lu Qian of Hong Kong and Tsinghua University Education Foundation contributed millions, and many overseas Chinese contributed books.
Architectural features
The design idea of "Liyuan bookstore" aims to cooperate with nature, let the man-made material environment condense the prosperity of nature into a spiritual atmosphere, and create a harmonious coexistence of man and nature, the unity of man and nature. The water surface in front of the site, the waterfront plank road, the flat paving of pebbles and the space enclosed by the fence (from the firewood mixture all over the mountains) make the library itself integrate with the natural environment. In the scene, both shading and light transmission, while showing a strong regional characteristics, the library is also named "Li Yuan".
"Liyuan library" is a 30 meter long, 4.35 meter wide (axis) and 6.3 meter high rectangular building with a total construction area of about 170 square meters and two floors in some parts. The main structure uses 100x100 and 100x200 square steel as the main structural members. A column every two meters is connected by welding, and the outer protective material is tempered glass. On the facade of the building, 90 cm is taken as the modulus, and a circle of steel frame is welded every 90 cm, with firewood poles inserted in the middle. The interior is decorated with synthetic fir board. The 90 cm space is divided into two parts from the middle, forming a bookshelf and a large step for readers to sit on the ground and read easily.
The composition of the interior space is simple and straightforward. The main space is composed of large steps and bookshelves. Books are placed under the steps and become the main reading space. In addition, at both ends of the library, there is a relatively independent sunken sitting and discussion space. The interior of the building, which is composed of multiple spaces, is a 30 meter long large space without any partition or furniture, highlighting the integrity of the space. The only partition is the porch when entering the room from the concrete gate hole. The concentrated entrance space paves the way for the next main space.
In order to integrate the building with the surrounding environment, the designer also introduced firewood commonly used by local villagers and arranged them behind the glass curtain wall to form a fence. The library adopts a hybrid structure of steel and glass, with both lighting and firmness. The external wall is made from the branches of more than ten kinds of trees, such as Acacia and mulberry, which are used by local villagers. The wood and light are in harmony with each other, and the brightness of the whole space is evenly distributed, creating a strong atmosphere of books.
purpose
"Liyuan bookstore" can provide free reading materials and space for tourists and villagers. At the same time, it can also be used as a Qingshe garden for tourists and villagers to communicate with each other.
Although it exists in the valley, the platform scope of the library is not limited by the region, serving the local community and the surrounding urban settlements.
The most beautiful library
The 18 most beautiful libraries in China
Borges once said: I have been secretly thinking that heaven should be like a library. For bookworms, the library should be the most magnificent and substantial building in the world, which carries countless possibilities. In the library, you can pick up a good book, immerse yourself in the world of words, and have spiritual communication with the smartest people. Maybe this is what heaven should be like.
The US business insider website lists 18 of the most beautiful "paradise" in the world, so that bookworms can plan their own reading maps. Among them, the only one on the list and ranked eighth is the ruoyuan bookstore in Huairou, Beijing. Xiaobian once had the honor to interview Mr. Li Xiaodong, the designer of Xuyuan bookstore. In this issue, the fortune school will introduce this building "distilled from nature".
Liyuan bookstore is located in a small town in Huairou District of Beijing. It is the work of designer Li Xiaodong. The single story Li Yuan library is fully integrated into the surrounding natural environment. The library is made of wood. The exterior of the library is covered with firewood sticks. The sun shines through the gap of the sticks and spreads all over the library.
There is no partition or furniture in the interior of the library. The main space is composed of large steps and bookshelves. Books are placed under the steps, and the steps become the main reading space. The arrangement of the books is arbitrary. Readers can pick out the books they are interested in and find a comfortable seat nearby to read. The sunlight casts the rustling shadow into the interior space through the firewood stalks sandwiched in the facade and roof glass, bright and gentle. In such an environment, reading has become a way to get close to nature, and architecture has become a natural room for people to breathe freely.
Liyuan bookstore, covering an area of more than 170 square meters, was built as early as 2011. It is a public library built by Li Xiaodong, a professor of Architecture School of Tsinghua University, for the local Jiehe village. The square building is made of square steel as the main structural component, and the outer protective material is toughened glass, while the outer side of the glass is covered by more than 40000 firewood stalks of about half a meter in length and thickness, like a giant bird's nest growing in a valley. From a distance, the waterfront plank road, the paved pebble road and the Li Yuan library surrounded by the fence are integrated with the natural environment of the valley.
Adhering to Li Xiaodong's consistent concept of "using local materials" and "integrating into nature", the library draws materials from firewood stalks used by local villagers. In winter, when the plants dry up and the valley turns gray, the study will be integrated into the valley scenery. In the next spring, these firewood stalks will attract birds to make nests. When feces and soil are mixed together, plants will attach themselves to grow, and the whole study will be rejuvenated with the surrounding Valley. If the firewood stalk is damaged, you can use local materials and find a new branch to replace it. Li Xiaodong's design idea is that architecture comes from nature and becomes a part of nature. Human intervention is hidden in the dialogue with nature. Architecture seems to be distilled from the surrounding natural environment and combined with the regional state.
Li Xiaodong said: "what I create is the environment, not the architecture. Many people have to be outstanding in building, but I want to make the architecture disappear. In fact, this is the strength of traditional Chinese architecture. Our traditional architecture emphasizes courtyard and space, not the building itself. Environmental construction is an advantage and should be used. We can explore our own language, such as "harmony between man and nature", which Westerners don't understand. But we can integrate the house into the environment and create a kind of aura. "
This is not the first time that Li Xiaodong has used this idea to design architecture. In 2003, he designed a hope primary school "Yuhu wanxiao" in Lijiang, Yunnan Province. Based on the Naxi culture with mountains as the bone and water as the soul, a large number of white limestone sedimentary rocks and pebbles with rich local resources are used in the design. The decoration of Gables is also simplified into wooden grilles. The construction is different from the layout of traditional Naxi quadrangle buildings, but directly combined with nature.
It was Li Xiaodong's first project to explore contemporary regionalism. This architectural idea, which is different from the current urbanization construction in China, has brought him many international architectural design awards, such as the innovation award of the jury of UNESCO Asia Pacific Cultural Heritage Award, the annual best design award of the American Association for environmental design and research, and so on. After that, Li Xiaodong designed miaolu in Lijiang, Qiaoshang bookstore in Pinghe County, Fujian Province, xiashiqiaoshang primary school and other projects, all of which are based on the local specific environment.
The library incident
In September 2017, he was ordered to suspend business for collecting pirated books.
The official account of the public number found that a large number of pirated books were found in the "public library" of "hedge library". There are pirated "White Deer Plain" written by people's Literature Publishing House on the cover and October literature and Art Publishing House on the inside, pirated "Harry Potter and Half Blood Prince" mixed with Chinese and English, and a collection of famous writers written "World Literature Publishing House". In fact, this publishing house does not exist. In the library, there are seven copies of "cangdi code", which have been crumpled into one, and the pirates have directly replaced the original trademark. There are even large sections of books with explicit pornographic descriptions.
