The Xiluo bridge on the chuoshui River, the longest river across Taiwan, is a representative building in the period of "Sino US cooperation" and has made remarkable contributions to Taiwan's economy. Its majestic and magnificent red figure has already become a beautiful scene in the image of the town.
Xiluo Bridge
Xiluo was an important martial arts town in the past. The most famous place of interest is the Xiluo bridge, which spans the Zhuoshui River and connects Xiluo town of Yunlin County and Xizhou township of Zhanghua county. The bridge is made of steel and cement. The bridge is 7.3 meters wide and 1940 meters long. Located within 178 of Datong Road, Mount Tai shigandang is five feet high. It is also the only remaining shigandang in Xiluo and the largest one in Taiwan. In the local area, shigandang is worshipped by the residents. At the time of sacrifice, the nearby residents always present flowers and fruits to pray for blessing.
history
Chuoshui river is an important boundary river in Central Taiwan. Because of the vast river, the map of Taiwan drawn by Europeans in the 16th century even mistakenly divided Taiwan into North and South Islands. For a long time, people on both sides of the Strait have to rely on bamboo rafts and other means of transportation for a long time. If there is a surge of water in the stream, the traffic between the two places will be seriously affected. Therefore, there has been a discussion about the construction of traffic bridges.
During the Japanese occupation period, the land bridge across the lower reaches of the chuoshui river was only the railway Zhuoshui River Bridge, not the highway land bridge. Passengers crossing the chuoshui River have to transfer to railway or bamboo raft.
The Xiluo bridge was contracted out for construction in 1937 (Japanese occupation period: Showa 12). The main construction part of the bridge during the Japanese occupation period was the piers. The method was to first make the elliptical hollow slab formwork with tietiao bang, and then grouting and sand pumping to increase the weight and make the slab formwork sink. This repeated operation made the foundation pile height of each pier about two stories high, and 32 piers took about two years to complete. Later, due to the Sino Japanese war And the Pearl Harbor incident. After the war, with the aid of the United States, the national government started work again on May 29, 1952, completed it on December 25, and officially opened it to traffic on January 28, 1953. Xiluo bridge is 1939.03 meters long and 7.3 meters wide. It has 32 piers and 31 bridge openings. It adopts Warren's crossing type and is made of steel. The bridge mud is mainly cement. At the time of completion, it was the second largest bridge in the world after the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco and the first bridge in the Far East. In addition, a sugar railway is also set up on the bridge, which is the latest section of the North-South parallel preparatory line to be completed. In 1979, part of the railway was demolished for obstructing traffic.
In 1997, after the completion of Xizhou bridge between Zhongsha bridge and Xiluo bridge, Xiluo bridge was transformed into a temporary bridge for small vehicles, locomotives and bicycles. In 2000, it was proposed that the bridge should be demolished because it was old. With the efforts of Yunlin County and Zhanghua county government, Xiluo bridge was transformed into a sightseeing bridge. On November 19, 2004, Zhanghua county government listed Xiluo bridge as a historical building in Zhanghua county.
The magnificent and magnificent red figure of the Xiluo bridge has been crossing the first long river in Taiwan, the chuoshui River, for more than half a century. Now because the highway has replaced most of the transportation of the Xiluo bridge, it has lost the aura of transportation, but it has already become an indelible scene in the image of the small town.
In 1990, more than 15 metric tons of heavy vehicles were banned. Now only small cars, motorcycles and bicycles are allowed to pass, and the bridge is planned for sightseeing and leisure. In 1987, to celebrate the 45th Anniversary of the opening of Xiluo bridge, Luoyang culture and education foundation held the first bridge sightseeing Culture Festival, which has been warmly echoed by local residents and tourists. So far, it has held several bridge sightseeing culture festivals. During the activity, tourists and people who have been in constant contact with each other walk onto the bridge one after another to cherish the past scenery of the bridge.
