The origin of names
The name of Yau Ma Tei is closely related to the temple of Queen of heaven in Yau Ma Tei. According to the stele in 1870 (the ninth year of Tongzhi) in Tianhou temple, the place was called "juandi" at that time. Later, in 1875 (the first year of the reign of Emperor Guangxu), juandi was the place where fishermen dried hemp ropes on their boats. Many tung oil and hemp cable shops, which are engaged in fishing boats replenishment, are set up there, so they are renamed "yaudi". According to the collection of rates in 1873, people in Yau Ma Tei not only engaged in ship maintenance, hemp ropes, oars, blacksmiths and timber, but also engaged in groceries, haircuts, rice shops, brothels, opium shops, longevity shops, honor guard flower bridges and so on.
In fact, "Yaumati" was originally used to correct the name of the area, but it was simplified by the people. After the construction of Yaumati station by MTR (still the MTR Corporation of Hong Kong at that time), it was agreed that "Yaumati" would be written as a common name. Later, "Yaumati" has replaced "Yaumati" and become the common name of the area. Like other old districts in Hong Kong, most of the buildings in Yau Ma Tei are underground and the second floor are for commercial use, while the rest are residential. Hong Kong's famous street, Temple Street, is located in the district. Temple Street is named after the temple of Queen of heaven in Yau Ma Tei. Every night, the streets of Temple Street are filled with stalls selling all kinds of goods and food, just like the night market in Taiwan. Because the goods are cheaper and the streets are full of authentic styles, Temple Street has become a tourist destination for tourists.

development planning
Without the government's urban planning and supervision, in order to make the best use of the expensive land, the real estate developers develop the new buildings to the high altitude, and on the other hand, reduce the distance between the buildings to the minimum, forming a screen, making the old area inside the urban area like a basin. In Hong Kong, Tai Wai, Tsuen Wan and Sham Shui Po are all facing this problem. Some residents in Yau Ma Tei said that the construction of screen buildings around Yau Ma Tei has raised the temperature in the area. Some residents have to turn on the air conditioner to relieve the heat, which makes the electricity cost high in summer.
According to the survey conducted by environmental protection groups, several skyscrapers may be built on the reclaimed land of Yau Ma Tei, which may block the West Kowloon air vent, block the light and slow down the wind speed, resulting in the screen effect, which will worsen the living environment of the residents from Mong Kok to Yau Ma Tei. Tan KaiBang, President of environmental protection, pointed out that one of the sites is located in the reclamation area at the junction of Haihong Road, Xinxiang Road and Youxiang road in Yau Ma Tei. The plot ratio is as high as 7.5 times. It is estimated that the developer will build several 130 meter high residential buildings.
