History of Beihang University
At the beginning of the school
Founded in 1952, Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics is the first university of Aeronautics and Astronautics in New China, which was formed by the merger of the aeronautics departments of eight universities including Tsinghua University at that time. The aviation departments of the eight institutions participating in the establishment of Beijing Institute of Aeronautics refer to the aviation departments of Tsinghua University, Beiyang University (today's Tianjin University), Northwest Institute of Technology (today's Northwest University of Technology), Xiamen University, North China University of Technology (today's Beijing University of Technology), Southwest Institute of Technology (today's Chongqing Jianzhu University), Sichuan University and Yunnan University.
On October 25, 1952, on the basis of the merger of the school of Aeronautical Engineering of Tsinghua University with the Department of Aeronautics of Sichuan University and Beijing Institute of technology, Beijing Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, the first university of Aeronautics and Astronautics in New China, was established.
In May 1953, after the site of the school was selected in baiyanzhuang, Haidian District, the northwest suburb, on June 1, the construction of the school started on a piece of farmland and a mound of earth around which there was no highway. Thousands of construction workers fought day and night, and completed the construction of 60000 square meters within half a year. In October of the same year, all the students and some of the staff moved to the new school and began to study and work normally. The planned capital construction task will be basically completed by 1957, with a completed area of 135245 square meters, 64160 square meters of roads, and an investment of more than 35.6 million yuan.
In June 1954, in order to meet the needs of aviation industry construction, Beihang added two departments of aircraft equipment and aviation materials, as well as seven specialties of aviation instrument and automation, aircraft electrical equipment, special equipment, metallographic heat treatment, casting, pressure processing and welding.
From 1956 to 1957, according to the requirements of China's 12 year scientific planning, Beihang took the lead in setting up missile, management and aerodynamics majors in China. Missile design, liquid rocket engine, aerodynamics, radio equipment, aviation engineering economics, instrument technology and other specialties were added, and the only Department of aviation engineering economics in China's aviation universities at that time was established. In this way, there began to be a new specialty which was different from the Soviet model and was set up according to the actual needs of China's aviation industry, and three research laboratories of aerodynamics, aircraft structural mechanics and jet engine principles were set up.
In 1958, Beihang carried out the work study program, advocated and practiced the four combinations of teaching, scientific research, design and production, and carried out the aviation model development. In 100 days, all the teachers and students of the school completed the development of "Beijing No.1" light passenger aircraft approved by Premier Zhou Enlai himself. On September 24 of the same year, the flight test was successful, and the flight test of 2500 km route between Beijing and Shanghai was carried out. China's first sounding rocket - "Beijing No.2" was successfully developed, and it was successfully launched at baichengzi shooting range in Northeast China on September 22 of the same year Beijing No.5, a self-developed unmanned control system, was installed on An-2 aircraft. It was refitted into a pilotless aircraft and successfully flew on September 25 of the same year, which opened the way for the development of China's pilotless aircraft.
In 1958, the major of solving device, rocket ground machinery and launching device was newly established. In 1959, new specialties such as aviation non-metallic materials, corrosion and surface protection, radio navigation, radar, remote control and telemetry, aviation atomic energy engine design, etc. were established, and research laboratories for rocket engine and missile control system were established. Together with the previously established research laboratories for aerodynamics, aircraft structural mechanics, jet engine principle and gyroscope, further research projects were formed The center of the work.
In May 1959, the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China issued the decision on designating a number of key universities in Colleges and universities, and Beihang became one of the first batch of 16 key universities in China.
In 1960, the Department of Aeronautical nuclear power, aeronautical technology and Engineering Physics was added, and in 1961, the Department of aircraft automatic control was established. So far, Beihang has set up 10 departments and 35 specialties.
