historical background
Zhanjiang, with a long history, is the largest city in western Guangdong. Because it is close to the sea, it was ruled by western countries in modern times.
In 1899, Zhanjiang City was "leased" by France. At that time, it was called "Guangzhou Bay". Foreign trade flourished for a time. In 1943, Guangzhou Bay was occupied by Japanese army. After the victory of the Anti Japanese war in 1945, Guangzhou Bay returned to China and was named "Zhanjiang" since then.
In 1898, the French entered Zhanjiang by force and began to lease "Guangzhou Bay", which is now the urban area of Zhanjiang. After the outbreak of the Anti Japanese War, Chinese coastal ports were occupied one after another. The French leased area of Guangzhou Bay (now the urban area of Zhanjiang) was in a corner, and foreign trade and economic development flourished for a while. In 1943, the Japanese occupied Zhanjiang. According to Qu Zhi, the French stayed in Zhanjiang for 45 years and left many French architectural relics in the urban area.
There are many Western-style buildings left by the French on Xiashan district's Haibin Road, mainly including French office building, verdo Catholic Church, evangelical church, French bank, etc. these buildings are reinforced concrete structures, reflecting the French popular architectural style at that time and full of strong cultural atmosphere.
In recent years, Zhanjiang City of Guangdong Province has given necessary protection to these French buildings. Some French buildings are listed as municipal cultural relics protection units, and some are still in use and play a certain role. After Zhanjiang was selected as an excellent tourist city in China, these French buildings are gradually becoming a new scene for tourists to understand the history of Zhanjiang.
