Xiangtan Confucian Temple
Xiangtan Confucian temple is located in Chengzheng street of Xiangtan city. It was built in the early years of Shaoxing in the Southern Song Dynasty, on the side of the small east gate. It was destroyed in 1354. In 1369, it was rebuilt as a special place for offering sacrifices to Confucius. The temple is a closed courtyard building, which is composed of Lingxing gate, panchi, pailou, Dacheng gate, Dacheng hall, Sixian temple, Chongsheng hall, Zhonggu Pavilion, etc. Dacheng hall is the main hall. During the 16th year of Hongwu (1383) and the 11th year of Zhengde (1516), the college was repaired or expanded. At the end of Ming Dynasty, it was destroyed by war again. It was rebuilt in 1652. In Jiaqing, Daoguang, Xianfeng, Guangxu, Xuantong and the third year of the Republic of China (1914), the 36th year of the Republic of China (1947) and 1983, it was repaired many times and removed from the Lingxing gate to the outside of the gate. Now it is the location of the school of continuing education of Hunan University of science and technology.

Architectural structure
The temple is a closed courtyard building, which is composed of Lingxing gate, panchi, pailou, Dacheng gate, Dacheng hall, Sixian temple, Chongsheng hall, Zhonggu Pavilion, etc. Dacheng hall is the main hall. It is a double eaves, Xieshan, Jiuji, Qikou, surrounded by 16 circular ancient pillars supporting the corridor, yellow glazed tile, inside and outside square, caisson, Dougong are painted with five colors. During the 16th year of Hongwu (1383) and the 11th year of Zhengde (1516), the college was repaired or expanded. At the end of Ming Dynasty, it was destroyed by war again. It was rebuilt in 1652. In front of the temple is xuegongping, also known as Xueping. At the south end of the Ping is damingbi. The red walls and yellow tiles of the temple are magnificent. The main gate is called Kuixing gate. Cypress trees are planted on the left and right sides of the front yard. They are green all the year round and fragrant. There is a moon shaped pan pool in the gate of Kuixing, and stone railings around the pool. There are three stone squares near panchi. The plaque of the stone square in the south is engraved with the word "Si Wen Zai Zi". The East and West squares run through the streets. Through Shifang is dachengmen. Around the entrance is the bell and drum pavilion with green eaves. Dacheng gate leads to Dacheng hall, and there is a Shipu corridor leading to the base of the hall. The platform is one meter high and made of stones. There are two steps on the left and right, in which there is a stone dragon, decorated with clouds and waves, lifelike, leaping on the stone. Dacheng hall is a double eaves structure of Xieshan style. There are 16 round stone columns around it. The inner and outer beams, purlins, caissons, brackets, fans and Wu are painted in five colors. The yellow tile eaves are magnificent. At the back of the hall, there is the Yasheng hall, which is lined with Dacheng gate and Kuixing gate, showing the magnificence of the main body of Dacheng hall.
Historical change
The Confucian temple is the seat of Xiangtan simple Normal University, Xiangbei construction college, Xiangtan Party school, Xiangtan Teachers College and Xiangtan teachers college. Today, there are dachengmen, dachengdian, chongshengdian and zhongguting, which are now protected cultural relics in Xiangtan city.
In 1926, with the rise of the workers and peasants movement, the first Xiangtan Student Congress was held in the Confucian temple. In 1927, Comrade Yang Zhaozhi, Secretary of Xiangtan County CPC Committee and chairman of the general trade union, was killed in Xueping. Therefore, it has a certain revolutionary significance. Now the Confucian temple is the school building in Yuhu District of Hunan University of science and Technology (Xiangtan Normal University).
