Chongqing Zoo is located in Yangjiaping, Jiulongpo District, covering an area of 410000 square meters. It is a large comprehensive park in Chongqing. The park was built in 1954, formerly known as the Western Park. After 1958, it was mainly used to display animals, so it was renamed. The park is surrounded by hills, dense bamboo and wood, green grass and flowers. The green peach blossom river flows around the park. The park is also the population base of the National South China tiger breeding center. Development and evolution
In 1953, Chongqing Zoo began to build.
In August 1953, the park preparation team was formed by the former Chongqing Municipal Construction Bureau. In September of the same year, Professor Liang Baiyun of southwest people's Science Museum and Professor Li Chaoran of Southwest Agricultural College were invited to guide the park site selection, survey, planning and design.
On January 7, 1954, 10 hectares of land was requisitioned for the construction of "Yangjiaping Park" in xiashiqiao, Yangjiaping, with Taohuaxi as the center. The infrastructure construction started in March of the same year and was completed at the end of December. It was named "Western Park".
On January 24, 1955, the Western Park was officially opened.
On March 28, 1958, Comrade Mao Zedong inspected the Chongqing Iron and steel company, and later went to the West Park (the predecessor of Chongqing Zoo). He instructed: "this park should be built well, serve the steel workers and the people of Chongqing.". Later, the original Chongqing Municipal People's government decided to expand the West Park into a zoo. The first phase will be expanded to 22.3 hectares.
In 1959, the second phase of the park was expanded to 44.5 hectares.
In October 1960, the West Park was renamed "Chongqing Zoo".
In 1961, after Chongqing Zoo was borrowed and returned some land according to the policy, the area was 41 hectares, and then expanded to 48 hectares. After that, a comprehensive plan was made to build large animal houses, increase animal species, adjust greening and add service facilities.
In 1962, the goldfish Hall of Chongqing Zoo was completed and fully restored in 2006.
In 1966, Chongqing Zoo was built into a medium-sized zoo.
In 1979, tourists from Chongqing Zoo bought tickets to enter the park, the highest number of 2.371 million in 24 years.
In October 2002, the bird talk forest of Chongqing Zoo was completed, covering an area of 2.7 hectares.
In 2008, the hippopotamus Hall of Chongqing Zoo was converted into a fully open building.
In September 2008, the lovely animal area of Chongqing Zoo was built into a new ecological venue.
In October 2015, the comprehensive Zoological Museum of Chongqing Zoo started construction and was opened to tourists on October 1, 2016, with an area of 740 square meters and a construction fund of more than 2 million yuan.
In May 2016, the construction of the penguin Hall of Chongqing Zoo began, which was opened to tourists on October 1 of the same year, with an area of 470 square meters and a construction fund of nearly 2 million yuan.
In October 2016, the animal feed distribution center of Chongqing Zoo was rebuilt and put into use on the original site of the feed room.

Chongqing Zoo Park has luxuriant ancient and famous trees, a wide variety of plants, with a green space rate of 71% and a green coverage rate of 85%. Chongqing Zoo science classroom is located next to children's Park, covering an area of about 230 square meters. For children aged 3-12 years old, many special activities such as animal science movies, hand-made paper-cut, mask painting, Specimen Exhibition and free reading of animal science books have been set up all year round. Through the exhibition and explanation of animal living environment, physical features and living habits, people's awareness of animals has been expanded and people's awareness of caring for the ecological environment has been enlightened.
The animal feed distribution center of Chongqing Zoo was rebuilt from the original site of the feed room, with a building area of 468 square meters and a floor area of 237 square meters. It was officially put into use in October 2016. After the completion of the new feed distribution center, it will have a complete feed processing production line (including pellet feed production), animal feed nutrition analysis, detection of aflatoxin and pesticide residues in feed and raw materials and other functions. The feed distribution center has also set up a science popularization activity room, which can effectively carry out relevant science popularization interactive activities and carry out science popularization.

Panda House
As of March 2017, the number of giant pandas in Chongqing Zoo has reached 15 (including 3 exhibited in Toronto, Canada), ranking first among zoos in China.
On June 23, 2019, giant pandas "Lanxiang" and "mangzai" in Chongqing Zoo gave birth to twins respectively. The twins born to Lanxiang are all male, while the twins born to mangzi are a pair of "Sister Flowers".
Penguin Pavilion
Penguin Pavilion is divided into two parts: landscape gallery and breeding management room. Landscape exhibition gallery is divided into inner exhibition gallery and outer exhibition gallery. The design and decoration of the external exhibition corridor is ice and snow landscape in line with the penguin's original ecological living environment, which is divided into two activity areas: onshore and underwater.
