Unicorn Nature Reserve

Qilinchai Nature Reserve was established in 1983 with the approval of Guangdong Provincial People's government by Yue Fu Han No. 198363. It is a combination of Wenchang and Qionghai Kirin nature reserves of Hainan Province. The reserve covers an area of about 130 km2. The local seaweed farms are mainly authorized to manage and operate these reserves. The seaweed farms are approved by Hainan forestry bureau to set up fishery administration station to perform the management and protection duties.

The eastern coast of Qionghai City, Hainan Province, which is the juncture of Wenchang County, Qionghai City, is located at sangengzhi (110ordm E; 43.5 ′ 19ordm n; 24 ′) to Caotang village, Tamen Town, Qionghai City (110ordm E; 39 ′ 19ordm n; 15 ′). It covers an area of 25 square kilometers, with an area of about 5000 mu for cultivation of Eucheuma.

Protection value

Eucheuma is a kind of precious tropical marine algae. It grows on the coral reefs on the sea floor and is known as a crop on the sea floor. The gum content of Eucheuma is about 30%. It is an industrial seaweed for extracting carrageenan. It's the raw material for agar. This is the only chinese Unicorn breeding base in China.

Geographical distribution: in tropical and subtropical sea areas, with the equator as the center, extending to the north and south. The country with the largest output is the Philippines, followed by China, with a certain quantity distribution in Australia, New Zealand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Japan, etc. China is mainly produced in Hainan and Taiwan.

Morphological characteristics: Eucheuma is perennial, and its life cycle is composed of two generations with similar appearance: sporophyte and gametophyte. When the sporophyte is mature, some cortical cells form tetrasporangia. The tetraspores in the sporangia are arranged in an order shape. After mature, they are released from the body, attached to the coral reef, and germinate into male and female gametophytes. When the male gametophyte matures, spermatocysts are formed on both sides of the branchlets; when the female gametophyte matures, fruiting cells are formed from the inner side of the cortical cells, on which spermatids are produced, protruding from the surface of the algal body. When the sperm of the male gametophyte is released into the water, the fruit cell fertilizes and develops into a cyst, which contains fruit spores and protrudes from the side of the algal body. After the fruiting spores were released, they attached to the corals and germinated to form a new algal body, sporophyte. Eucheuma mainly grows on coral reefs 1-5 meters below the low tide line, and grows better on the outer edge of coral reefs and places with good exchange of sea water. Generally, the algae in shallow water are thick, thick and green brown, while in deep water, the branches of algae are relatively open, and some are dark red.
