The library promotes the art of Hong Kong film for the people of Hong Kong and provides a large amount of information for filmmakers and researchers. At present, there are more than 5600 copies of films in the archive. The earliest one is the scenery documentary film shot by Edison Company in Hong Kong in 1898. The library also collects information about films, including stills, scripts, movie posters, soundtrack records, special issues and contract documents, Film Awards, props, etc.

history
The Hong Kong Film Archive was opened in January 2001, but it was built by the then Hong Kong Urban Council in 1993. It began to collect and preserve copies of Hong Kong films and related materials, such as posters and magazines. In 2000, the library was transferred to the leisure and Cultural Services Department.
In 1996, the Hong Kong Film Archive became a member of the International Federation of Film Archive (FIAF) and exchanged and shared experiences in film preservation and restoration with other countries.

Collections and programs
The film archive selects collections and programmes according to the following criteria to ensure the collection value and to provide a wide range of film programmes for the public. All collection and donation projects and program proposals are subject to the evaluation of the program review group and the advice of the film consultant will be consulted when necessary.

Guide and reward
The Hong Kong Film Archive regularly organizes exhibitions on different topics and arranges guided tours for groups to apply for.
All primary schools, secondary schools, post-secondary colleges, universities, registered charitable and non-profit organizations registered in Hong Kong can apply for this service. (for charitable and non-profit organizations, please attach copies of relevant supporting documents to prove their charitable or non-profit nature when submitting their applications.)
The maximum number of participants in each group is 30. Please arrange at least two teachers or staff to accompany them. Due to the limited space of the exhibition hall, if there are a large number of participants, the exhibition hall will arrange group tours and guided tours in different periods.
The tour is about 1 hour and 15 minutes, including the introduction of the exhibits in the exhibition hall and the facilities of the resource center on the third floor. The exhibition guide service is only applicable to exhibitions held by the Hong Kong Film Archive (except on Thursdays, Sundays and public holidays). Please pay attention to the dates and topics of the exhibitions on our website.

Opening hours: library, 10:00-20:00, or 15 minutes after the movie. It is closed on Thursdays (except public holidays) and on the first and second days of the lunar new year. The theater will be open until 17:00 on Christmas Eve and Lunar New Year's Eve, from 12:00 to 20:00 on Monday to Sunday, or 15 minutes after the opening of the last movie on Sunday, and will be closed on Thursdays.
