geographical position
Tai Po District is one of the 18 districts in Hong Kong. It is located in the east of the new territories, covering Tai Po, Tai Po Kau, Ting Kok, Chuan Wan and part of the northern part of the Sai Kung peninsula. With a total area of about 14800 hectares, it is the second largest administrative region in Hong Kong.
Tai Po District is located in the northeast of the new territories. It covers Tai Po and Sai Kung north with a total area of about 14700 hectares. Sai Kung north is listed in Tai Po District because of its close traffic links in the past. Residents of Sai Kung north often come to Tai Po for business, so they have established a close relationship with Tai Po, which remains unchanged.
The history of Tai Po can be traced back to the Tang Dynasty. According to the records of the literature, Tai Po was known as Huizhou blade at that time and was famous for producing bengzhu. During the Song Dynasty, due to the invasion of foreign nationalities, the wars in the Central Plains continued frequently. The common people fled the disaster of war and moved south one after another. Some of them finally settled in Dapu. Since then, the population has been growing.
During the Ming Dynasty, the Deng family settled in Dapu and established Xiaozi temple, daputou village and market. This market is now called old market of Dapu, which is located in the plain north of lincun River and has gained economic monopoly. With the development of population and products, the Wen family of Taiheng village established the "seven treaties" with seven nearby villages. In 1892, another new market, Taihe City, was built. The seven covenant Rural Committee also built the Wenwu temple to establish the Zhiqing Temple of Taihe City, and built roads adjacent to the temple to expand the urban area, gradually forming today's Tai Po market. After the construction of the Guangfu bridge, the economic activities of the two fairs have gradually expanded and become the centre of the fairs in the new territories.
The new territories were leased to England in 1898. The flag raising ceremony was held at the original site of the old Tai Po police station, which symbolized the beginning of New Territories governance. Since then, Tai Po has become an important administrative center in the new territories. In 1910, the opening of the Kowloon Canton Railway promoted the development of Tai Po.
Tai Po is originally a simple town with historic sites and charming rural scenery. Due to the development of the times, the industrial development, the city center gradually urbanized, buildings, traffic, pedestrians such as crucian carp, coupled with the establishment of industry, transformed into a bustling downtown. However, on the outskirts of the city center, the villages still retain their traditional features, with towering ancient trees, solemn ancestral halls, and the quiet elegance of the suburbs. They are different from the prosperous areas and coexist peacefully.
Tai Po has a population of about 320000. Most of the residents live in the private housing estates and six public housing villages in the old and new market. The rest are scattered in more than 80 villages.
