brief introduction
Although the British occupied Kowloon as early as 1860, it did not attract more European residents until the beginning of the 20th century. Rev. C.H. Hickling started religious gatherings in the Kowloon British school in 1902, but it stopped for a short time. After the completion of St. Andrey's Church in 1905, the church members turned there to hold Sunday worship. In 1922, about 200 parishioners living in Kowloon signed a petition letter to apply to the government for the allocation of land for the construction of a cross sectarian Church similar to the Youning Church in Hong Kong. Sir Paul Chater, who had donated money for the construction of St. Andrea's church, promised to pay the construction cost if the land was allocated by the government. In 1923, Rev. J. Horace Johnston arrived in Hong Kong to set up a party in Kowloon. The first party was held in the central British school on the first Sunday of January 1924. On September 19 of the same year, the first building of the Church (today's Church Auditorium) was opened to public worship. Youning Church in Kowloon was officially established in 1927. Theologically, the church is subordinate to the Protestant church. Its appointed chief pastor is also elected by all the pastors of the mainstream Protestant church. However, the membership of the church is open to all members who mainly serve Christ. Originally, the government promised to reserve a large piece of land behind the Kowloon Hospital in Yau Ma Tei for the establishment of a permanent site for the Youning Church in Kowloon. However, in exchange for the current site in Jordan, the foundation was laid on May 28, 1930, and the church and Parsonage were completed and opened on April 10, 1931. During the Japanese occupation of the Second World War, church activities were suspended, church buildings were severely damaged, all furniture and equipment were looted, the roof of the school auditorium was demolished, and the church auditorium was changed into a manger. After the war, the church was rebuilt. When purchasing furniture, two back benches were found in a second-hand shop. The church reopened on October 19, 1947. The church gradually expanded. In 1955, the two-story Sunday college was completed, with a small auditorium on the ground floor and classrooms on the upper floor. The site and facilities are also available to other Christian organizations, including the one church in Cantonese and the Lutheran Church in Putonghua.
