San Tung Uk village is a replacement old Hakka Wai village in the new territories of Hong Kong. It was originally located in Tsuen Wan near the existing Tsuen Wan Station (the local name is Niu Ku Dun). Later, due to the subway project, it was moved to the north of Xiang Shan estate and the south of Tai Mo Shan. The old village is well preserved, so it has been set up as a three building museum by the government and has become a statutory historic site in Hong Kong
Sandongwu village was built by Chen family members. Originally, it lived in Ninghua County, Tingzhou Prefecture, Fujian Province. Later, one of its members moved to Luofang, Xin'an County, Guangzhou Prefecture, Guangdong Province. In the 13th generation, Chen Rensheng, one of the villagers, moved to Tsuen Wan. He reclaimed land from Tai Wo Kou for farming and built a thatched cottage. Chen Jianchang, his eldest son, later took a fancy to a place in the west of niugundun. He found that Fengshui was excellent, so he established a village there, which is called sandongwu village.
San Dong Wu village was founded in 1786. Originally, there was only one house with three entrances. Dong means the main beam. Therefore, San Dong Wu village got its name, which can be interpreted as "a house with three pillars". Later, Chen's descendants successively built houses on both sides and behind the village, which gradually became the present appearance. The layout was symmetrical like a chessboard. The front hall, the middle hall and the ancestral hall were built on the central axis respectively. The word "Chen's ancestral hall" was engraved on the lintel of the main entrance. Four living rooms were built on both sides. The horizontal rooms on the left and right sides and in the back row surrounded the whole village.
In the first quarter of 1979, due to the construction of the Tsuen Wan line of the Hong Kong Metro, the villagers of sandongwu village abandoned their original site and moved to another village. In 1987, the site of sandongwu village was renovated by the then Regional Council and opened to the public. It is now managed by the leisure and Cultural Services Department. The existing sandongwu village is located near the junction of sandongwu road and Yihe.
