Shanghai University of traditional Chinese medicine, formerly known as Shanghai College of traditional Chinese medicine, was founded in 1956. It is one of the first four Chinese medicine universities in New China. In 1993, Shanghai College of traditional Chinese medicine changed its name to "Shanghai University of traditional Chinese medicine", and in 2000, it merged with the former Shanghai Medical College. Founded in September 1956, Shanghai University of traditional Chinese medicine is one of the first Chinese medicine universities established in China. It was then known as "Shanghai University of traditional Chinese medicine". Cheng menxue, a doctor of traditional Chinese medicine, was personally appointed as the first president by Premier Zhou Enlai. The school has continued to develop the profound traditional Chinese medicine heritage and tradition of Shanghai Special School of traditional Chinese medicine (founded in 1917), Shanghai Chinese Medical College (founded in 1927) and Shanghai New China Medical College (founded in 1935), which have important influence in the development history of modern Chinese medicine. The private Shanghai College of traditional Chinese medicine (renamed private Shanghai College of traditional Chinese medicine in 1932) founded by a famous doctor Ding Ganren is the first college of traditional Chinese medicine in China.
After its establishment in 1956, the school was under the charge of Shanghai Higher Education Bureau. Since 1964, it has been under the direct leadership of the Ministry of health of the people's Republic of China. After 1982, it has still been under the leadership of Shanghai Municipality. In 1958, it moved to 530 Lingling Road.
In January 1959, the earliest specialized museum of medical history in China, the Museum of medical history of Chinese Medical Association (founded in 1938), was incorporated into Shanghai College of traditional Chinese medicine and renamed as the Museum of medical history of Shanghai College of traditional Chinese medicine (renamed as the Museum of medical history of Shanghai University of traditional Chinese medicine in December 1993; after the establishment of Shanghai Museum of traditional Chinese medicine in 2003, the system of Museum of medical history was retained).
In 1960, acupuncture and moxibustion was first established in Chinese medicine colleges and universities.
In 1978, China resumed postgraduate education. As the first batch of enrollment units in Chinese medicine colleges and universities, the university enrolled postgraduates from all over the country.
In 1981, with the approval of the State Council, the University became one of the first batch of doctoral, master's and bachelor's degree awarding units approved by the state.
In 1983, entrusted by the World Health Organization, the cooperation center of traditional medicine and the international acupuncture training center were established.
