Chongqing China Three Gorges Museum, also known as Chongqing Museum, is one of the first batch of national first-class museums and national museums jointly built by central and local governments. It is located in Yuzhong District of Chongqing, directly opposite the Chongqing People's hall. Its predecessor was southwest Museum established in March 1951, renamed Chongqing Museum in June 1955, approved by the general office of the State Council in September 2000, and added the name of "Chongqing Museum". Its new museum was officially opened to the public on June 18, 2005.

. The exhibition consists of 4 basic exhibitions, 6 special exhibitions, 1 360 degree full week film exhibition, 1 semi scene exhibition, 1 audience practice center and 3 temporary exhibitions.
In February 2020, in order to pay tribute to the medical workers struggling in the front line of anti epidemic, Chongqing China Three Gorges Museum implemented a free visit policy for all medical workers in the country from the date of resumption of operation to December 31, 2020.
Development history
On March 8, 1951, southwest museum was established in Chongqing.
In October 1951, the southwest museum was officially on display. Guo Moruo, then Vice Premier of the Government Affairs Council of the people's Republic of China, inscribed the name of the museum.
In October 1953, the southwest people's Science Museum (formerly known as the Western Academy of Sciences) was incorporated into the southwest Museum.
In June 1955, southwest region was abolished and southwest museum was renamed Chongqing Museum.
In September 2000, Chongqing China Three Gorges Museum was established with the approval of the general office of the State Council, and the original Chongqing Museum was officially merged into the Chongqing Museum with the name of Chongqing Museum.
On June 18, 2005, the new site of China Three Gorges Museum in Chongqing was officially opened to the public.
In November 2006, Chongqing China Three Gorges Museum was awarded the title of "advanced unit of public cultural facilities management" by the Ministry of culture.
In April 2007, Chongqing China Three Gorges Museum was awarded the "ten best tourist attractions".
In late September 2008, after the May 12 Wenchuan earthquake in Sichuan Province, the hall of porcelain of the past dynasties, which was temporarily closed, was opened to the audience for free after adjustment.
On July 10, 2009, Chongqing China Three Gorges Museum and Egypt Nubian Museum signed a letter of intent for friendly cooperation.
In October 2018, it was rated as the national research and practice education base for primary and secondary school students.
architectural composition
The main project of Chongqing China Three Gorges Museum covers a total area of 2.9316 hectares. It is a class I high-rise building. The first floor underground is used for cultural relics warehouse, garage and equipment room, and the fourth floor above ground is used for exhibition hall, lecture hall and auxiliary management room.
The general layout of Chongqing China Three Gorges Museum is based on the East-West symmetry axis of the people's auditorium, and connects the people's Square with the main building of the museum with a gestalt. The people's auditorium, people's Square and Museum on the main axis are Trinity, forming a "Trinity" four-dimensional effect. The people's Square and the museum are connected by a huge pipa.

Zaohua Three Gorges
This unit describes the unique landscape and mountains and rivers in the Three Gorges area of the Yangtze River created by billions of years of marine and continental deposits and the geological movements such as "Jinning movement", "Indosinian movement", "Yanshan movement" and "Himalayan movement".
The main contents include: the formation and overview of the Yangtze River and the Three Gorges, the climate of the Three Gorges, the animals and plants of the Three Gorges, etc.
The main exhibits are: silicified wood, gold carving, water cypress branches, sunken wood, zinc smelting sites, etc.
Between mountains and rivers
This unit tells the story of the unique Three Gorges civilization formed in the special natural environment by the Three Gorges people in the process of inheriting history and creating civilization.
The main contents include: Three Gorges houses, Three Gorges trackers, etc.
The main exhibits are: traditional residential buildings in the Three Gorges, wood carvings of Xiang's genealogy in Shizhu County, main means of transportation in the Three Gorges, etc.
Three Gorges wind
This unit tells the colorful history, culture, myths and legends of the Three Gorges of the Yangtze River, as well as the magnificent poems handed down through the ages.
The main contents include: the story of the Three Kingdoms, hydrological culture, Taoist culture, witch culture and so on.
The main exhibits are: the seal of Pian general, the bronze statue of Guan Yu, the embroidered model of the former division, the iron pillar of suojiang, the gold belt, the collection of Ming Yuzhen tomb, the seal of Qin Liangyu's "Prince Taibao general town Guanfang", the Jingyun Shendao stele of quren, the inscription on Baiheliang, the bronze plate decorated with gold-plated coffin, and the turtle divination of Tang Dynasty.
The Three Gorges forever
This unit tells about the Grand Three Gorges water control project and the spirit of the Three Gorges immigrants. It has China's first full week digital seamless ring screen movie hall, which can better show the original appearance of the Three Gorges before the impoundment of the Three Gorges dam.
The main exhibits are: the handwriting of Mao Zedong's "water melody singing head: swimming", Sun Yat Sen's "people's livelihood" and "the Great Three Gorges" digital ring screen films.

The ancient Bayu unit is a collection of cultural relics from the stone age and bronze age, which focuses on the display of Chongqing's ancient civilization and traces the origin of 3000 years of culture.
Years of Anti Japanese War
The Anti Japanese war years unit, with rich cultural relics, highlights the contribution and sacrifice made by Chongqing and its people to the cause of human peace and progress during the Anti Japanese war in China and the anti fascist war in the world. Among the six special displays with various highlights, "Li Chuli donated cultural relics exhibition" gathers all kinds of cultural relics donated by Li Chuli, a famous late collector and senior cadre of the party, to commemorate the revolutionary old man's selfless dedication and demonstrate his superb appreciation of cultural relics.

According to the museum's official website in July 2016, there are more than 100000 cultural relics and more than 50000 materials in its collection. The treasures with important historical and artistic value include more than 500 Paleolithic artifacts in Sichuan, more than 1000 Bashu cultural relics, more than 100 Han Dynasty stone and brick paintings, more than 4000 ceramic wares from famous kilns of past dynasties, and more than 5000 famous calligraphers and painters since the song and Yuan Dynasties.
The Chongqing China Three Gorges Museum also houses the remains and handwriting of historical figures Ming Yuzhen, Zhang Xianzhong, Qin Liangyu, Zou Rong, etc., as well as the works of painters Qi Baishi, Zhang Daqian, Xu Beihong, Zhu Xuanxian, Su Baozhen, etc. There are about 30000 pieces of modern cultural relics, including the cultural relics of the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom, the Chongqing religious plan, the revolution of 1911, the May 4th movement, the long march of the Red Army, the Anti Japanese War and other major historical events. From June 24 to June 26, 2013, Duan Jinming, director of Dali Museum, led a team to visit the China Three Gorges Museum in Chongqing.
On June 13, 2015, the "12th Five Year Plan" national heritage protection exhibition was held in Chongqing China Three Gorges Museum.
On April 9, 2016, a painting and calligraphy exhibition commemorating the 80th anniversary of the victory of the Red Army's long march was held in Chongqing China Three Gorges Museum with the theme of "inheriting the red gene and carrying forward the spirit of the long march".
