Located in the southwest of Kaohsiung City, Qijin is a long and narrow island with northwest southeast trend. Early Qijin, known as "Qihou", refers to the tribe behind Qishan. Later, in 1726, a Dutch missionary compiled a map of Taiwan, which was called "hanternas". In 1860, the Treaty of Beijing was signed during the battle of the British and French allied forces. Because of its good geographical location, Qijin became a trading port. A few years later, in the second year of tongzhi (1863 A.D.), the Qihou area was officially opened. It was the first area to be developed in Kaohsiung. Later, the Kaohsiung Municipal government invested more than 50 billion yuan to build the Qijin marine park, which is a good place for sightseeing and recreation.

The most famous cultural relics on Qijin island are Qijin ferry, tricycle, lighthouse and marine park. In the early days, the external traffic of Qijin was mainly ferry. Now with the cross harbour tunnel, the traffic is much more convenient. On the contrary, ferry has become a gimmick to attract tourists. Qijin lighthouse, also known as Kaohsiung lighthouse, is located on the top of Qijin mountain. It was built in the 9th year of qingguangxu. It is the second lighthouse on Taiwan Island. At that time, due to the frequent entry and exit of ships in Kaohsiung, the government ordered the construction of Qijin lighthouse for navigation because of the lack of existing port escort facilities and frequent shipwrecks. Later, the lighthouse was rebuilt. The angle of the lighthouse is octagonal and there is a balcony for overlooking the panoramic view of Kaohsiung harbor.
