The precipitous mountains, steep cliffs, winding stone paths and zigzag roads are the important gateway to defend the capital, and the place for military strategists in ancient times. The pass has two cities. Shangcheng, also known as Shangguan, is the pass of the great wall of the Ming Dynasty. It was built in the early years of Hongwu. Together with Zijingguan and Juyong Pass, it is called "neisanguan". On both sides of the pass, the Great Wall meanders from east to west, which is extremely dangerous. "Civil change" Tartars entered and destroyed Guancheng. In the third year of Jingtai (1452), because the upper city wall was small, the lower city was rebuilt in sangyuan, 3 li south of the city, and now the city of daomaguan was lying. Maguancheng is made of strips of stone and natural stone with green bricks. There are towers on the East and West gates. The plane is rectangular in East and West, surrounded by ditches. It is close to the mountains in the south, the Tang River in Beiyang, and seven battle platforms on the city wall. In the 24th year of Jiajing (1545), Guancheng was rebuilt and a general was set up. Under its jurisdiction, Guankou is three in the northeast and fourteen in the southwest. Nowadays, the layout of the city remains the same. Besides Guancheng, there are many cultural relics and historic sites, such as the old government office, the stone tablets of Yangye and Yangyan's Zhaozhong Festival built in Ming Dynasty, the stone tablets of daomaguan and LIULANG in the north of Chengguan, which are important materials for studying the history of the pass. Daomaguan is named for the steep mountain road, where the horses often fall.
The total length of Yuanguan city is about 2.5 kilometers, covering an area of about 70000 square meters. The wall is 6 meters wide at the bottom, 4 meters wide at the top and 10 meters high. Guancheng is made of strips of stone and natural stone with green bricks. There are towers on the East and West gates, surrounded by ditches, mountains in the south, Tang River in the north, and seven enemy towers on the wall. Guancheng has three gates: the east gate is called "Juren", the west gate is called "Youxi", and the north gate is called "Xuanwei". There are two gates in the East and the West. There is only one South Gate in xiwengcheng. About 100 meters west of the south gate, there is a Shuiguan battle platform building on the Bank of the Tang River. There is a door at the bottom of the building, which is the only passage from the lower city to the upper city. There was a battle tower outside the north gate, which was destroyed by floods in the 28th year of the Republic of China. The main street in the city is 12 meters wide. In the middle of the cross street, there used to be a two-story military parade building. There is a cross passage on the upper floor. Historical records
Daoma pass was established earlier than Changshan pass in Han Dynasty. However, all the records about the construction of daomaguan city are from Ming Dynasty. Daomaguan is divided into Shangcheng and Xiacheng. Shangcheng was built in the early years of Hongwu in Ming Dynasty and later renamed shangchengkou. Xiacheng is now daomaguan. At present, there is a broken white marble stele in the courtyard of daomaguan township government, which is called daomaguan city building stele. The inscription records the construction of daomaguan in 1465. It can be seen that daomaguan city was first built in 1452, and then a large-scale construction was carried out in 1465. Daomaguan City, about 2.5 kilometers in circumference, is 6 meters wide at the bottom of the wall, 4 meters wide at the top, and 10 meters high. The wall is made of loess rammed with bricks and stones. There are three gates in the East, West and north of Guancheng. The architectural design of Guancheng is unique. It is built on the cliff, by the deep stream, half in the valley and half on the mountain. The whole Guancheng is built according to the terrain. The Tang River flows around Guancheng from the west, North and East. Mountain, water and Guancheng complement each other and are dangerous to each other. The ancients' deep strategy, strict fortification and marvelous architecture are amazing.
According to the records of the general annals of Jifu, daomaguan is 60 kilometers northwest of Tang County in Hebei Province. The mountain road is steep and the horse falls for it, so it gets its name. Daomaguan is located in the eastern foot of Taihang, north of the Great Wall, back to the Tang River. The southeast is the dangerous shibapanling. Since ancient times, daomaguan has been a strategic center. According to the records of Houhanshu, in the 15th year of Jianwu (A.D. 39), because the Xiongnu often invaded the northern border of the Eastern Han Dynasty, the government of the Eastern Han Dynasty moved the residents of Yanmen, Daijun and Shanggu to live in the east of changshanguan (daomaguan) and Juyongguan, so as to prevent the Xiongnu from invading, which shows the barrier function of daomaguan.
Daomaguan is located on an ancient passage, which is called "Lingqiu road". According to the records of Gaozu in the book of Wei, 50000 people from prefectures and counties were mobilized to repair Lingqiu road in the sixth year of Taihe (482 AD). Lingqiu road starts from Pingcheng in the North (northeast of Datong City in Shanxi Province) and Hengshan in the south. From below Lingqiu, it goes out of Taihang Mountain and reaches Zhongshan in the South (now Dingxian County in Hebei Province). It was the main road leading to North China Plain in the north of Shanxi Plateau at that time. Daomaguan was an important pass on this road.
The Ming Dynasty Ma Zhongxi's "poem and preface to daomaguan" said: "there are two mountains in the pass, and the road is very dangerous. It is said that Yang LIULANG came here to Maguan, so it's named." In order to commemorate Yang Yanzhao's achievements in guarding the three passes, later generations built the "LIULANG stele" on Maquan mountain, 3 kilometers west of daomaguan City, in 1520 A.D. The stele is 1.8 meters high and 60 cm wide. It is carved with white marble. The front of the stele is decorated with corners and the two sides are carved with cloud pattern lace. The inscription reads: "Song Dynasty general Yang LIULANG refused to defend the place." Yang Yanzhao was born in Bingzhou (today's Taiyuan, Shanxi Province). He was the patrol envoy of Baozhou (today's Baoding, Hebei Province) in the time of emperor Zhenzong of Song Dynasty. Later, he was promoted to the defense envoy of Baozhou for his meritorious service in fighting with Liao soldiers. Yang Yanzhao has been guarding the border for more than 20 years. Liao soldiers are very afraid. For thousands of years, many literati have come to daomaguan to pay homage to the LIULANG stele and praise the immortal achievements of Yang liulangwei.
