Crab beetle is named because its eastern end is shaped like a crab claw. The ancient city wall of Wuchang was built along this ridge, so it has the name of Chengshan. At present, there are still remnants of the city wall near the East moat in the north of the west section. The bricks are embedded in the hillside, about 100 meters long and about 5 meters high.

Crabs are perennial herbs, 30-70 cm high. The whole plant is hirsute. The root is stout, branched, the lateral root is locally expanded, and the tuberous root is round and brown yellow.

Perennial herbs. The main root is thick, spindle shaped, 2.5 cm in diameter, branched, and the lateral root is spherical in shape, brown yellow. The rhizome is cylindrical, on which there are dense and persistent petioles at the base, single stem from the top and branches from the base. Stems tufted, erect or ascending, unbranched, 15-20 cm high, lower part 3 mm thick, cylindrical, upper part quadrangular, sparsely appressed stellate villi. Basal leaves numerous, lanceolate oblong or narrowly oblong, 5-9 cm long and 2-3.5 cm wide, apex obtuse or suborbicular, base cordate, margin crenate, cauline leaves small, ovate oblong to oblong, 2-3.5 cm long and 1.2-2 cm wide, apex rounded or broadly cuneate, margin crenate, bracts oblong lanceolate to linear lanceolate, 1.8-3.5 cm long and 0.6-1.2 cm wide The leaf blade is rugose, olive green above, covered with stellate hispid hairs and simple hairs, light below, sparsely covered with stellate short hairs, the petiole of basal leaf is 2-5 cm long, that of stem leaf is 0.4-1.3 cm long, and that of bract leaf is very short to nearly sessile. Cymes many flowered, 3-5, distal part sparse; bracts spinose, ciliate and stellate puberulent, nearly as long as calyx. Calyx tubular, 9-10 mm long, 4 mm wide, outside densely stellate and glandular puberulent, upper veins with mixed stellate puberulent and simple hairs, teeth ca. 1.3 mm long, rounded, apex with spinule ca. 1.2 mm long. Corolla ca. 1.5 cm long, outside densely pilose on labellum, corolla tube glabrous except back, with inner hair ring, upper lip ca. 5 mm long, margin dentate, with inner beard, lower lip ca. 8 mm long, 6.5 mm wide, 3-lobed, middle lobe larger, obcordate, ca. 3.5 mm wide, apex emarginate, lateral lobes ovate, smaller, ca. 2.5 mm long. The stamens and styles extend slightly, and the filaments of the latter pair of stamens have hook like appendages on the hairy ring. Style apex unequally 2-lobed. Nutlets apically covered with granular indumentum. The flowering period is July.
Growth environment
It grows on dry hillside, shrub and field, 4300-4600 m above sea level.
