Green Island

Green Island

Green Island, formerly known as "jixinyu", "qingziyu" and "huoshao island", is a volcanic island with many hills. The highest point is Huoshaoshan, which is 280 meters high. There are many cliffs near the sea in the southeast. There are more than 10 kilometers of plain sand beaches in the southwest corner. The terrain near the coast in the northwest is low, which is the main settlement of the island. There are different opinions on the origin of the name of Huoshao Island, among which the theory of Huo Shao island in the Jiaqing period of the Qing Dynasty is most widely believed. Green Island is Taiwan's fourth largest subsidiary island, administratively belonging to Green Island Township of Taitung County. The residents of the island were mainly Han people (Minnan nationality) who immigrated from xiaoryukyu and Donggang in the middle of Qing Dynasty.

All around the green island are surrounded by skirt coral reefs. In addition, the high and steep platform cliffs near the sea are eroded by the sea. The coastline is lined with volcanic rocks and white shell beaches, and the sea is blue, showing a full ocean atmosphere. The Green Island Lighthouse is located on the promontory in the north of the northwest airport of the island. The tower is nearly 10 meters high. It is a white tubular building. Surrounded by green space, the tower tops the blue sky and faces the blue sea. The scenery is very beautiful. Jiangjun rock is located in the north of the island. It is a small group of coral reef rocks protruding from the sea. Its shape looks like a general helmet protruding out of the sea from a distance. Its shape is called strange and gets its name. Green Island Park is located in the northeast of the island. The park is covered with green grass and trees, with a sea view Pavilion opposite to the Pacific Ocean. The meditation Pavilion is located in the south of the park, with waterfalls and water beside it. The scenery is quiet and warm. The Yangzhi Pavilion stands along the mountains, overlooking the four fields and the wonders of the coast. Guanyin cave is located in the northeast corner of the island. It is formed by the erosion of the Uplifted Coral Reef by the running water for a long time. Because of its concealed location and the continuous running water all the year round, it looks very cool. There are small stalactites and stalagmites in the cave, which are like limestone terrain. One of the stalagmites is about 1 meter high, which is like the shape of Guanyin Bodhisattva. It is said that it is the incarnation of a Bodhisattva. The island residents often come to burn incense to worship. Since then, the number of believers has increased greatly, so it has become a Buddhist holy land for the people on the island. Haishenping is a charming Bay on the east coast of the island. At the south end of the Bay, there are huge rock landscapes like "Pug" and "Sleeping Beauty". The dog steps on the ground and guards the sleeping beauty lying flat. The shape is vivid and interesting, which is the main focus of haishenping landscape. Xuhai hot spring is located near sailboat nose in the southeast of the island. It is a rare natural submarine hot spring, also known as "Asahi hot spring". This kind of hot spring is only found in Kyushu of Japan and northern Italy, so it is regarded as rare. Dahu hot spring is located on the east coast of the island. It is a sulfur spring, which has no stimulation to human skin. The average water temperature is about 70 ℃. When the tide rises, it is submerged by sea water, and the water temperature drops. When the tide falls, the hot spring is exposed, and the spring temperature rises, so it is not suitable to soak. In order to expand the use of hot spring pool, the management department has built a spring area to make it a natural bath with sea water bath.

Green island used to be a prison in the 1970s and 1980s. In Taiwan's history, all the felons were imprisoned here. It is well known that the famous writer Bo Yang and other ideological prisoners were imprisoned here. The prison riot described in the early movie "Fire Island" is a story about the history of Green Island, which left a deep impression on the audience.

The general pinyin is Lyu Dao, the Chinese pinyin is LV Dao, the green island or l ü Dao township. Originally known as huoshao island or Huoshao Island, it is also known as qingzai island and Jixin island.

Gongguan, Zhongliao and Nanliao villages are concentrated in the northwest coastal area. Nanliao village is the economic center of the island, and Nanliao Bay (with fishing port) is in the south of the village, which is the gateway of the island's seaway transportation. There are many special topographical landscapes on the island. In addition to the semi artificial Green Island Park in the center of the island, there is Guanyin cave under the hills in the southeast, Lizi cave on the east coast, loumenyan on the northeast coast, jiangjunyan and jiangjunya on the north coast, haishenping on the south end and Chaori hot spring (submarine hot spring) on the southeast. The population is about 3202 (2003).

Green Island Scenic spots are all distributed along the 19 km long ring road. You can walk for about 4 hours and ride a motorcycle for only 40 minutes. Zhongliao and Nanliao villages in the northwest are the places where people gather. In Nanliao harbor, all kinds of boats come in and out frequently. In Nanliao street, shops full of sightseeing atmosphere are connected. In Zhongliao village, there are airports, tourist centers, lighthouses and so on.

There are rugged mountains in the East and south of the green island. You can see the scenic spots around Niutoushan for the first time by going clockwise from Zhongliao village circular island highway. You can enter Gongguan village along the coast. Along the way, there are natural wonders such as jiangjunyan, Niutoushan, Yanzi cave and Guanyin cave, as well as artificial landscapes such as skill training institute and Zhaoqin reservoir. Guanyin cave is named for its unique stone like Guanyin; Yuzi Lake in the south of Guanyin is the earliest settlement, which is of great historical significance. The situation of the mountain facing the sea and the huge sea erosion cave are also visible. The road starts to climb after the lake. The highest place is the ladder trail called "little Great Wall". Nearby, it is the best place to enjoy sleeping beauty rock and pugou rock. After that, the road was again close to the sea, and soon it reached the world-class Asahi hot spring, surrounded by sailboat nose grassland, Ziping lagoon area, camping area, etc., which were all places to be visited. After that, it went back to guiwan on the West Bank, which was known as "the epitome of Taroko" because of its steep mountain wall and road cutting. It just went around guiwan nose and returned to Nanliao port.

The beautiful underwater world of green island is a paradise for diving enthusiasts. Shilang, Zhongliao, Chaikou, Yuzi lake, Dabaisha and guiwan are all ideal diving sites. However, a large number of corals were trampled by tourists and suffered great damage.
