Introduction to Shi Yang

On the evening of February 7, 1923, the Northern Warlords arrested Shi Yang, the legal adviser of the Beijing Han Railway General Union and a member of the Communist Party, on the charge of "inciting labor unrest".

On the 15th of the same month, he was shot at the foot of Hongshan. That night, workers of Hankou rickshaw union risked their lives to collect Shi Yang's body in the river temple outside Wuchang City. In July of the same year, the CPC Hubei party organization and the Hubei Provincial Federation of trade unions and Youth League buried Shi Yang's coffin at the northern foot of Hongshan mountain. In 1953, due to the expansion of the road, Wuhan Federation of trade unions moved the cemetery to its current site.

Historical site

Facing south, the main body of the cemetery is composed of three parts. It enters from the entrance, ascends the steps and passes through the archway. It is a square for worshiping. Shi Yang's whole body statue stands in the center of the square (half body statue before 1995). On the base is engraved with a poem written by Comrade Dong Biwu in 1957: "the February 7th workers' hatred for blood, Wu Xiao's long-lasting stink, lawyers should fight for human righteousness, die for fame, and keep the couple of martyrs.". The monument is 5 meters high, the base is 2.2 meters wide and 35 meters long. On the left side is the biography of the martyrs, and on the right side is the story of the February 7th massacre. Behind the monument is Shi Yang's tomb. The martyrs were originally buried at the foot of Hongshan mountain, and later moved to the hillside to build the existing mausoleum. Facing south, the tomb is octagonal, with a side length of 1.9 meters. It reads "Tomb of Shi Yang martyrs".

Design implication

The design of the whole cemetery is full of later generations' admiration for the martyrs. The steps, statues, tombs, monuments and evergreen cypresses and pines all show the beauty of axial symmetry with their solemnity and solemnity. The cemetery is surrounded by rows of tall buildings and surrounded by lush trees. It is not only the habitat of the martyrs, but also the place for the youth to carry out revolutionary tradition education and patriotism education.

Honor and title

In 1956, the people's Committee of Hubei Province announced it as a provincial cultural relics protection unit.

In 2005, 13 departments, including the national development and Reform Commission, the Propaganda Department of the CPC Central Committee and the National Tourism Administration, recently jointly issued a document to list Shiyang martyrs' cemetery as one of the 30 excellent red tourism lines in China.

In order to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the founding of the people's Republic of China, the national development and Reform Commission allocated special funds for the comprehensive maintenance and renovation of Shiyang martyrs' cemetery
