history
Stanley has been one of the main settlements of Hong Kong Island since ancient times. The place name of Stanley has been marked in yuedaji, an important local chronicle of Ming Dynasty.
According to the first census conducted by the British in May 1841, more than 2000 of the 3650 indigenous residents of Hong Kong Island live in Stanley. When Hong Kong became a British colony in 1842 and Victoria city was not completed, Stanley was the administrative center of Hong Kong Island. Later, although the administrative center was set up in the upper central district of Hong Kong Island, Stanley was still one of the residential areas dominated by the British.
In addition, Stanley is also a military stronghold. During the Qing Dynasty, Stanley has been known as the camp flood of Stanley flood. Hong Kong was in the British colonial period in the 1930s. In order to prevent Japanese aggression, the British army set up Stanley barracks in Huangma Kok. During the construction of the barracks, because there were Hakka farmers living in the original site and nearby, the Hong Kong government built eight bungalows in Stanley street to accommodate the original residents, namely eight houses. During the Hong Kong defense war, British troops stationed in Hong Kong were attacked by Japanese troops in Stanley. During the Japanese rule period, Hong Kong was a concentration camp for white people. After World War II, the Hong Kong government executed at least 22 Japanese war criminals in Stanley. The former British barracks in Stanley were used by the Chinese people's Liberation Army after the handover of Hong Kong sovereignty.
During the period of British rule, the second half of the emblem of Hong Kong, the seal of Hong Kong, took place in Stanley. A Qun's road map tells the story of the British army landing in Stanley when they first arrived on Hong Kong Island. Chen Qun, a female Aboriginal, led the way to the central and upper ring area of Hong Kong Island. When the British soldiers passed Hong Kong Village, they learned from Chen Qun's Hakka reply that "Hong Kong" was the name of the whole island.
