Tianjin Medical College, the predecessor of Tianjin Medical University, was founded in 1951. It is a higher medical college approved by the former State Administration College after the founding of new China. Professor Zhu Xianyi, a famous endocrinologist and medical educator, was the first president. In 1993, Tianjin municipal Party committee and government decided to merge Tianjin Medical College with Tianjin Second Medical College to form Tianjin Medical University, which was approved by the former State Education Commission in December of the same year.
