The Central Academy of fine arts is the only higher academy of fine arts directly under the Ministry of education of the people's Republic of China. It was established in April 1950 by the merger of the national Peiping Academy of fine arts and the three fine arts departments of North China University. Mao Zedong named the Academy. The history of Beiping art college can be traced back to the National Beijing School of fine arts, which was established in 1918 under the initiative of the famous educator Cai Yuanpei. It is the first National Academy of fine arts education in Chinese history.
