Xi'an Foreign Studies University, founded in 1952, is one of the four foreign language colleges established early in New China. It is the only university with a complete range of major foreign languages in Northwest China. Its predecessor was the northwest Russian college, which was established by the combination of the Russian Department of Northwest University, the Russian Department of Lanzhou University and the Russian class of the Party School of the Northwest Bureau of the Communist Party of China. In 1958, it was renamed Xi'an Institute of foreign languages. In 1986, with the approval of the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council, it officially became an authorized unit for master's degree. February 2006
