Tonghua Normal University is located in Tonghua City, Jilin Province, at the foot of Changbai Mountain, on the Bank of Yalu River and on the border of China and North Korea. The college is surrounded by beautiful scenery and mountains, forming a Changbai Mountain Garden Style campus with Changbai Mountain natural and rough as the main theme and Changbai Mountain landscape trees and plants as the main scenic spots.

Tonghua normal college, the predecessor of Tonghua normal college, was founded in 1958 and upgraded to an undergraduate college in 1978 with the approval of the Ministry of education. After nearly 50 years of development, it has become a Provincial Normal University with teacher education as the main part and multi-disciplinary coordinated development.

The college has a complete range of disciplines, including 15 departments and 35 majors, including 30 undergraduate majors and 5 junior college (Higher Vocational) majors, covering 8 disciplines including law, education, literature, history, science, engineering, medicine and management. There are eight research institutes, including the Teaching Department of Ideological and political theory, the Teaching Department of foreign languages, the College of adult education, the center of educational technology and network, and eight research institutes, including Koguryo, Changbai Mountain culture, higher education, Changbai Mountain biological resources, applied mathematics, mental health education, Changbai Mountain new drug research and development and computer software.

There are 715 faculty members and 525 full-time teachers, including 42 senior (41 professors), 127 vice senior (122 associate professors), 157 intermediate (150 lecturers), 269 teachers with doctor's and master's degrees, and 73 teachers with doctor's and master's degrees. There are 2 experts who enjoy the special allowance of the State Council Government, 1 provincial lecturer, 1 provincial young and middle-aged backbone teacher, and 1 provincial famous teacher; the college employs English, American, Japanese and other foreign language education experts to teach in the college.

The college has sufficient teaching facilities and teaching conditions. Now it covers an area of 590000 square meters, a building area of 198500 square meters, 59 laboratories, and has fixed assets of 207 million yuan, of which the total value of teaching and scientific research instruments and equipment assets of more than 800 yuan is 48.52 million yuan. At present, there are 1631 teaching computers, 644 seats in speech lab and 3496 seats in multimedia classroom. The library has a collection of 910000 books and 1591 periodicals at home and abroad.

The college has a number of disciplines with good prospects and several influential research bases. At present, there are 1 provincial key discipline, 6 college level key disciplines, 4 college level key construction disciplines, 4 provincial excellent courses of optics, Chinese Koguryo history, botany and zoology, and 23 provincial excellent courses of mathematical analysis. There are 1 National Research Center: Chinese Manchu folk art research center, 1 provincial key research base of philosophy and Social Sciences: Koguryo research base, 1 provincial research base of philosophy and Social Sciences: Changbai Mountain culture research base, 1 provincial key research base of Humanities and Social Sciences: Koguryo and northeast ethnic research center. The college has five disciplines, and Jilin Normal University and Beihua University jointly train postgraduates. The Institute is a national leader in the research of Chinese Koguryo history, Changbai Mountain Manchu folk art, Changbai Mountain plants and other fields.

In recent three years, the college has published 1078 academic papers in journals at or above the provincial level, including 345 papers in core journals and 55 papers retrieved by SCI and EI. 88 scientific research awards above the Department and bureau level were awarded, including 14 national awards (Arts) and 11 provincial and ministerial awards. 43 academic works and 68 teaching materials were published. It has undertaken 227 scientific research projects above the Institute level, including 6 national scientific research projects, 85 provincial scientific research projects and 62 department and bureau level scientific research projects. Presided over 2 National Teaching and research projects and 25 provincial teaching and research projects. Four outstanding teaching achievement awards were won.

The college enrolls students from 20 provinces and cities in China, with 8552 full-time students, including 8122 undergraduate students and 430 Junior College (vocational) students.
