The predecessor of Ankang university is Ankang University, which was founded in 1959. In 1963, it was closed because of the national economic difficulties. In 1978, the Ankang specialty of Shaanxi Normal University was re established. In 1984, with the approval of Shaanxi Provincial People's government, it was renamed Ankang normal college. On February 14, 2006, approved by the Ministry of education, Ankang University was transformed into a full-time provincial undergraduate university.

The college is located in the hinterland of Qinba and the Bank of Han River. It is known as the famous western city of "Xi'an back garden" - Ankang City, Shaanxi Province. Ankang has convenient transportation. Xiangyu, Xikang and Yang'an railways meet here. National highways 316 and 210, Xihan and Xikang expressways pass through Ankang. The college overlooks Hanjiang River in the north and xiangxidong national scenic spot in the south. The campus has luxuriant flowers and trees, green grass, beautiful scenery and elegant environment. It is an ideal garden for reading and studying.

The planning area of the college is more than 1500 mu, and the existing area is 509 mu.
