Chengdu University of traditional Chinese medicine, formerly known as Chengdu College of traditional Chinese medicine, was founded in 1956. It is one of the first four Chinese medicine universities approved by the State Council under the kind care of Zhou Enlai and other party and state leaders. In 1995, it was renamed Chengdu University of traditional Chinese medicine with the approval of the State Education Commission. In 2006, it was formerly Sichuan health management cadre college and Sichuan reproductive health college It was incorporated into Chengdu University of traditional Chinese medicine. After more than 50 years of construction, Chengdu University of traditional Chinese medicine has become a key university of Sichuan Province with the subject of traditional Chinese medicine as the main body and the interdisciplinary and coordinated development of science, engineering, management, arts, agriculture, education and other related disciplines. It is also a University jointly built by Sichuan Provincial People's government and the State Administration of Chinese medicine, and an excellent university for undergraduate teaching evaluation by the Ministry of education.

Covering an area of 1800 mu, the university has 16 colleges, 35 undergraduate majors and 22000 full-time students, including more than 2000 graduate students.

The university is one of the first batch of authorized centers for doctor's degree and master's degree of traditional Chinese medicine, and one of the first batch of pilot units for clinical medicine (Master's degree and doctor's degree). The Affiliated Hospital of Chengdu University of traditional Chinese medicine (Sichuan Hospital of traditional Chinese Medicine) is the construction unit of the national clinical research base of traditional Chinese medicine (diabetes base) determined by the national development and Reform Commission and the State Administration of traditional Chinese medicine.
