He insists on physical exercise all his life. He is very healthy. He is over 80 years old. He still works vigorously and is known as "a living example of promoting sports". He has worked tirelessly and diligently for 52 years in a post all his life, and with the pace of the times, he is also known as "a banner of China's sports circles".
Life
John Ma was born on Gulangyu Island in Xiamen, Fujian Province. He lost his mother at the age of three and his father at the age of seven. When he was a child, he used to run, jump, climb trees, drill caves, play with water and catch fish and shrimps on the beach with other children. He didn't go home until dark. Comprehensive physical exercise, plenty of sunshine and fresh air, laid the foundation for his healthy body. Because of his family's difficulties, he didn't enter a private school until he was 13 years old. After entering school, he looked left and right at all the houses. There was no grass at all. He couldn't run and jump, so he jumped on stools and wooden piles. In a word, he doesn't want to stay still all day. At the age of 18, he went to Shanghai to study in middle school. At the age of 22, he was admitted to St. John's university preparatory course. Two years later, he was promoted to bachelor's degree. At that time, an anonymous person sent him the lowest living expenses every month until he graduated from university. When he graduated from college in 1911, he was 29 years old.
During his seven years in St. John's University, John Ma loved sports and was the main player of the school's football, tennis, baseball and track and field teams. He is good at short and medium distance running in track and field. He has won the championship of 100 yards, 220 yards, 880 yards, 1 mile and so on, and has won many times in the off campus competition. In 1905, Shanghai held a large-scale "World Games", in which Chinese and overseas Chinese participated. At the beginning of the one mile race, the competition was very fierce, with four Japanese running in front of each other, deliberately blocking other athletes. They were closely followed by a Chinese student, Ma John, who was about 10 yards behind the Chinese classmate. The other 50 competitors were far behind. At this time, hundreds of Japanese audience stood up and applauded. At the end of the third lap, John Ma speeded up and overtook the Chinese student in front of him. About 400 yards from the finish line, the Chinese audience chanted "John, come on! Come on Realizing that it was time for him to make the final dash, he said to the Chinese classmate, "keep up with me" and rushed to the right side of the Japanese. By this time, the cheers of the whole audience had already gone from "John! John Change to "China! China He was the first to reach the finish line 50 yards ahead. The Chinese classmate behind him also passed the Japanese, and the second one reached the finish line. John Ma immediately became a star on the playground. At a national games in Nanjing in 1910, he won the 880 yard race again.
Because of his outstanding athletic ability, he was employed to teach in Tsinghua University in the autumn of 1914. From then on, he was promoted from teaching assistant to Professor and served as the director of the sports department of Tsinghua University. Until his death in 1966, he worked in Tsinghua University for 52 years and devoted his whole life to sports. His main achievements are as follows: popularize physical education, let every student take part in forging, or before John Ma came to the school, Tsinghua has implemented "forced movement", that is, every Monday to Friday, from 4:00 to 5:00 in the afternoon, the library, dormitory and classroom are closed, and every student in the school must wear short clothes to the playground for exercise. But at this time, the "forced movement" was just a general call and administrative order. During the exercise time, some people still hid in the shade of trees, corners and other quiet places to study, and people who went to the playground did not necessarily exercise seriously and scientifically. After John Ma came to the school, when it was time to exercise, he would take a small book to look everywhere, not to remember the name and give punishment, but to persuade those students who hide to exercise, so that they can better serve the motherland in the future. He sets an example, exercises with the students, and guides them on the exercise methods at any time. He advocated the diversification of exercise programs to make the body develop in an all-round way and achieve the purpose of strengthening the physique. He often organized the students according to their different characteristics, planned to do some correction projects, and guided them to master the basic skills of running, jumping, equipment and ball games, which not only improved their interest, but also enhanced the effect.
He is very strict with his students. At that time, Tsinghua had a set of "physical strength test pass criteria", such as rope climbing 15 feet, 100 yards 13 seconds, long jump 14 feet, swimming 20 yards and so on. He is strict with the rules. When Wu Mi, a famous literature professor, was studying at school, all his lessons were excellent, but he failed in the long jump and was "detained" by John Ma. After six months, he passed the make-up examination before he was allowed to go abroad. As soon as a freshman enters school, John Ma has a general plan. He has a comprehensive consideration of when to practice what items, when to have a physical examination, how to keep up with those with poor grades, and how to improve those with good grades. In 1952, there were a group of tuberculosis patients living in a dormitory, mainly immobile or less mobile, and some were absolutely bedridden. The long-term ward life made them very distressed, and some people were depressed. After learning about this situation, John Ma took the initiative to contact the doctor of the university hospital and carried out "sports therapy" for the patients. He went to the ward and said to everyone, "the lung is not made of paper. It can't be torn by moving." He came to the ward with the doctor every day, organized different sports activities according to different conditions, and gradually increased the amount of activities. Later, some people could play badminton and tuopi. Most of the patients got better after physical therapy, medicine and nutrition, and some recovered to work or study. Especially in the spirit, so that patients have established the confidence of rehabilitation.
score
John Ma is very studious. In 1919 and 1925, he studied in Springfield University, and wrote theses such as "fourteen years of sports experience" and "the value of sports migration". In 1936, he took advantage of his vacation and served as the head coach of the track and field team of China participating in the Olympic Games to further enrich himself by visiting and lecturing in Europe and the Soviet Union. How to train according to the physical conditions and characteristics of the Chinese people, John Ma has made great efforts to compile nearly 100 sets of unarmed exercises. The movements and arrangement of these free hand exercises are unique, continuous and lively, in line with the law of movement. He also put forward specific guidance on the training methods of track and field and ball games. In the early days of Tsinghua University, there were more than ten kinds of sports teams successively established, including football, basketball, tennis, hockey, baseball, softball, water polo, long-distance running, swimming, skating, boxing, etc., most of which were under his guidance.
Due to the popularity of sports and good training methods, Tsinghua's sports level has improved rapidly. During the 10 years from 1911 to 1921, Tsinghua won 44, drew 7 and lost 7 foreign football matches in 58 times. In 1916, he won the Nanyang football team 3-0 and the Shanghai East China football team 2-1. At the end of 1929, he led the Tsinghua football team to Tianjin to participate in the sixth competition meeting of North China Sports Federation. There are many strong football teams participating in this competition. They have a strong desire to win. Some leaders promise to visit Japan after winning. In the result of the competition, Tsinghua defeated all the strong teams and won the championship. According to the school journal at that time, the news came that "the whole school was jubilant like waves in the sea, and everyone's heart was burning with a happy flame". There were big slogans everywhere: "I'm so happy that I want to roll" and "I'm willing to take off my boots for you.". When the team returned to school, people carried John Ma and others from the school gate into the auditorium (the auditorium was holding a new year's party) to celebrate.
