Tragic beauty
Sanmao's works are imbued with tragic beauty from the inside out. She shows people the pain in her heart, the hardship of life, the helpless struggle of ordinary people in the world, and the feeling of life with her gentle and pure strokes. Those simple words are full of tears. Sanmao has experienced a gloomy girlhood and a troubled youth and middle age, which makes sadness the keynote of her works. During the seven years of her girlhood, she curled up in her own world and felt her inner collision. In such a closed and lonely environment, Sanmao inevitably pays close attention to himself and is always in a very sensitive state. In particular, he can catch the feeling of pain very acutely and enlarge it consciously, making himself trapped in it and difficult to extricate himself. This sensitivity to pain has been maintained in Sanmao's character and has a great influence on her writing in the future. She pays attention to herself and the world around her with kind, sad and compassionate eyes. Therefore, the lines in her works are always filled with tragic beauty. For example, "how many flowers fall in a dream" is the saddest and most beautiful writing Sanmao wrote to Hersey: "it's you and me who are buried, and it's us who are gone. Although "no tears" and "no wailing", we can clearly feel the pain and despair of the author. As Sanmao himself said: "my handwriting, my mouth, with my mouth, express my heart." The shadow and pain in Sanmao's heart always flow from the tip of the pen. In Sanmao's works, readers can also find a lot of tragic characters. For example, the 12-year-old boy named Danielle in "the giant" loves and takes care of her disabled adoptive father and critically ill adoptive mother wholeheartedly. When he is invited to see a movie, he is "outside". My heart is at home, remembering my father and mother every second. " For example, in dumb slave, Sanmao successfully depicts a black slave who lives in deep suffering without personal freedom, but is full of love and wisdom. When the sentence "mute slave's figure gradually disappeared in the sunset" at the end of the article came into view, every reader felt sad and painful for mute slave. There are many such characters in Sanmao's works, such as Shalun who is infatuated with love but deceived in the search for love, and the nameless beggar in the tender night. Through these tragic images, Sanmao shows readers the beauty of human nature and human feelings.
Language features
Simple and natural is the most important aesthetic feature of Sanmao's prose language. Her language "tells the truth, writes the true feelings, draws the real scene". The formation of simple and natural characteristics of Sanmao's prose is related to his personality: Sanmao's personality is free and easy, frank and willful, and he is a rich man
