Main achievements
When he was young, he inherited his father's career and was familiar with Confucianism. He was very modest and respectful in front of the scholars. When he went out and met people he knew on foot, he always told the people who followed him to get out of the car and drive them off. He had more respect for the poor and the lowly. As his good reputation spread day by day, and he was familiar with Confucian classics, he was promoted from Chang Shiqi to Jianfu, and was changed to Duwei of Dahe county.
At the beginning, Wei Hong, Wei Xuancheng's second elder brother, was appointed as taichangcheng. He was responsible for the sacrifice of the ancestral temple and the management of the mausoleum. As Wei Fangshan's elder brother died early, his father thought that Wei Hong should ask for his resignation to be his successor. Wei Hong, with the intention of giving way to the successor of the title, refused to resign. When Wei Xian was seriously ill, Wei Hong was finally jailed for the temple.
When the family asked who should inherit the title of Wei Xian, Wei Xian refused to say because Wei Hong did not act according to his intention. At this time, Wei Xian's students and their clansmen discussed together to ask Wei Xuancheng to be the heir of the title under the pretext of Wei Xian's will.
When Wei Xuancheng heard the news of his father's death, he heard that he wanted to inherit the title. Knowing that this was not his father's intention, he pretended to be crazy and talked nonsense. He refused to accept his orders because he was ill.
Wei Xuancheng has always been very famous. Most of the literati saw that he pretended to be ill and wanted to give up his title to his brother. Therefore, the people concerned wrote to severely criticize him, and some of his friends wrote to the emperor that they should not be wronged. The prime minister and the censor impeached him by pretending that he was ill. It's a big deal. Emperor Xuan issued an imperial edict, saying that he would not impeach me and called him to see me. Wei Xuancheng was forced to inherit his father's title. Emperor Xuan praised his integrity and appointed him as the prefect of Henan county (ruling the northeast of Luoyang City in Henan Province) and his brother Wei Hong as the prefect of Donghai County (ruling the north of Tancheng County in Shandong Province).
A few years later, Wei Xuancheng was called up to serve as Wei Yang Gong Wei Wei, and changed his post too often. Later, because of his deep friendship with Yuanping tonghou Yang Yun, he was implicated. After Yang Yun was killed, although he was removed from his official post, the title of Marquis was still there. Once, when he accompanied Huidi temple as a marquis, because of the rainy day and slippery road in the early morning, he rode to the temple without driving the chariot of Sima. He was considered guilty and was demoted to Guannei marquis. He felt very sad about it and felt sorry for his ancestors. Later, in order to educate his second son, Liu Qin, the king of Huaiyang, Emperor Xuan recruited Wei Xuancheng and appointed him the lieutenant of Huaiyang state (the capital of which is now Huaiyang County, Henan Province). At that time, Liu Qin was young and had not yet gone to Fengguo, so Wei Xuancheng accepted the imperial edict and attended the Shiquge meeting.
Shiquge conference was an academic conference presided over and convened by Emperor Xuan himself. Since the Western Han Dynasty, when Emperor Wu deposed all schools of thought and respected Confucianism, Confucianism became the ruling ideology.
In order to further unify Confucianism and strengthen the rule of thought, Emperor Xuan ordered Wei Xuancheng to talk about the similarities and differences of the Five Classics in Shiquge, north of Weiyang palace in Chang'an City, together with the famous Confucians, such as Xiao Wangzhi, the crown prince, Liu Xiang, Xue Guangde, Shi Yu, Liang Qiulin, Lin Zun, Zhou Kan, Zhang Shanbi, etc. Emperor Xuan himself judged and ruled. After collecting the memorials of Shiquge's lectures, 155 memorials of Shiquge were compiled.
After this meeting, among the doctoral candidates, "Liang Qiu" was added in the book of changes, "big and small Xia Hou" was added in the book of changes, "Gu Liang" was added in the spring and Autumn Annals. This is of great significance in the history of Confucianism. This is the third year of Ganlu (51 BC).
In the first year of Huanglong (49 BC), Emperor Xuan died, and Liu Xun ascended the throne as emperor yuan. Emperor yuan appointed Wei Xuan as a Shaofu, and then promoted him to the crown prince Taifu, until he became the censor doctor, ranking as the third Duke.
In the spring of the second year of Yongguang (42bc), he took over the post of prime minister in Dingguo. After being demoted for 10 years, he finally inherited the position of prime minister held by his father Wei Xian, and restored the title of Fuyang marquis. As both father and son are proficient in Confucian classics, the proverb around Zou and Lu said, "it's better to pass on a Confucian classics than leave a box full of gold to your descendants."
Wei Xuancheng served as Prime Minister for seven years, and Yu Jianzhao died three years ago. Old history commented that he could not catch up with his father Wei Xian in sticking to the right path and being mature and stable, but his style of writing was better than his father's.
